An Israeli Weighs In ...


An American diplomat sent me the following article by Daniel Levy, who served as a policy adviser in the Israeli prime minister's office in the government of Ehud Barak. He was the lead Israeli drafter of the Geneva Initiative. The article, entitled, "So Pro-Israel It Hurts," first appeared in Haaretz and was republished in the International Herald Tribune.

Walt/Mearsheimer Round II (or three or four)


Walt and Mearsheimer have responded to their critics in The London Review of Books. I also recommend Tony Judt's piece on Israel at 58in Haaretz. More broadly, at a time when it may well be that some of the strongest voices for bombing Iranian nuclear installations are coming from Israel, it is an excellent time to have the broader debate about the extent to which Israel's interests and U.S. interests here coincide. From my point of view, I don't think it would be in Israel's interests either to bomb, but I CERTAINLY don't think it is in ours.

Betting on America


I want to continue the debate started by John in his post on The Security Trap Part II and continued excellently by many of the commenters. As should be evident to many readers, John and I are grappling with many of these bigger conceptual issues for our Princeton Project on National Security draft report. In reading the commentary on John’s recent posts, and as the result of an excellent discussion I had last week with term members of the Council on Foreign Relations who had read a draft of our report, I see the following issues as important points of debate and dissent.
