Stimulus: FAIL
It started out too small and improperly designed. Now it's even smaller and more malapportioned. They cut funding for state aid, education. I could puke.
Here is what should happen, but won't. Reid should be stripped of his leadership post. The new leadership should eliminate the filibuster and strip Nelson of any privileges. The actual Democrats should put together the $1.25 trillion bill they should have started with, pass it, and then go into conference and make the House bill match it. Obama should sign it.
Alternately, they should pass this garbage now, and then make it very clear that this failure will corrected as part of the budget process later this year.
Instead, Ben Nelson gets to walk around with his dick in the air, all these sellouts and sleazebags get to keep their jobs, and rest of us suffer. Disgusting.

That's one way to do it. The key though is that the Democrats need to make sure that whatever is passed is actually a good and effective bill. If the enemies of the people water it down and make it suck then it should be scrubbed and the President and the Democrats need to make it very clear who killed it and that these people need to either get on board or be swept away.

Krugman and numerous other observers think that if the President doesn't get a highly effective bill out now, that the chances of more effective legislation down the road are unlikely. I think that is probably true because to the extent that the Republicans think they won this round, they will become even bolder in their obstruction in the future. Unless they are made to pay dearly for their misbehavior they will only be emboldened. That's what makes pasaage of the right bill now so critically important.
