Harridan-in-chief targets Iran

If the U.S. and Israel take their bogus dismay over the "secret" Iranian nuclear site at Qom to the next, insanely stupid level - and either with draconian sanctions or military strikes against the Persian "republic" prompt yet another regional war - we can thank the tattoo of war drums thumping at Foggy Bottom.

Proving C.L. Montague's wry observation, "hell hath no fury like a noncombatant", Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has become the central hawk in the Obama Administration, and the Democrats' own steely Athena told CBS yesterday that Iran must present "convincing evidence as to the purpose of their nuclear program. We don't believe that they can present convincing evidence that it's only for peaceful purposes, but we are going to put them to the test on October 1st."

Why go through the mockery of a sit-down at all? Thursday's meeting is a foregone conclusion, Clinton seems to be saying; we're going to spit in their face, slap on the much-threatened "make 'em bleed" sanctions and go bowling.

And all this over a supposedly secret facility, years from coming on-line, that the U.S. has known about since the early Bush era. A CNN report on Friday noted:

The United States was aware of Iran's unfinished uranium enrichment site for several years, (according to senior U.S. officials)... (They) have known about the facility since President George W. Bush's administration, according to the officials who declined to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the negotiations... Iran came to realize fairly recently that the facility was no longer secret, so Washington found itself in a race with Iran to reveal the facility to the international community, the officials said.

So, our peerless leaders have kept this little bon mot in their hip pocket all these years, waiting for a juicy moment. With Russia momentarily placated by us junking the exorbitant East-European missile shield, and Israel telling everybody (but really not telling anyone) they're not interested in attacking, this may be the moment; the door is open to hostile escalation, and Israel and a "conciliatory" U.S. can always claim they did "everything" for peace short of relocating Everest. You won't hear any suspicions of duplicity from American media, CNN included, as it transforms itself, yet again, as megaphone for the Washington warmakers.

But there's an unavoidably public stink of phoniness about this whole "crisis": The "secret" nuclear facility  being readied by those dastardly Iranians portends advantages for all the usual suspects:

American efforts to marshal worldwide pressure against Iran have gained traction since the revelation last Friday that Iran was operating a clandestine nuclear site. Even Israel, which has long warned that a military strike might be the only effective response to Iran's ambitions, now seems satisfied to let President Obama play out his strategy of offering to talk while threatening to impose painful measures if those talks go nowhere. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel telephoned the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, and five other influential lawmakers on Thursday and Friday to urge the United States to pursue "crippling sanctions" against Iran, according to Israeli officials and people close to the lawmakers.

The sanctions will bar all refined petroleum products from reaching Iranian ports; for an oil rich country, Iran has few refineries, and the prospect of an outright blockade sent it to the missile ranges this weekend to fire off a few warning shots in the form of "test" rockets. That's the untimate aim of this nonsense - to push Iran to belligerence so the hammers can fall.

The same gambit at work here was successfully employed in Iraq, albeit we want Iran to strike the first blow, since the American people want another Mideast war the way they want another Spanish Flu pandemic.

Clinton, who so blithely threatened Iran with "annhilation" in a Presidential primary debate 18 months ago, may yet get her wish, along with Ariel Sharon, now comatose and out of the fray. In 2003, he famously counseled completion of the neocon blueprint for the region, urging the war spread from Iraq to Syria and Iran. Hmmm... all Israel's regional enemies in a pack.

Hillary Clinton and Ariel Sharon. Armchair amazon and sleeping prophet.

Two events occurred last week that immediately disappeared from discourse once President Obama talked of a secret second nuclear site in Iran.

First Israel was asked to open up its nuclear sites for inspection.

Second, and far more reprehensible was the UN report citing Israel for War Crimes in the Gaza.

The effect of Obama's shameless, sabre rattling against Iran was to deflect from those two events.

For the US and Obama to have any credibility re nuclear sites, they must take the same stand with all nations. The US and Obama must demand Israel submit to inspection by the IAEA.

And what of the Israel's War Crimes? When Libya's Ghaddafi spoke at the UN last week, some UN members (including the US) walked out because they thought a terrorist leader/nation should not have an audience. When Israel's Netanyahu spoke and tried to justify the War Crimes, there were no walk outs. Indeed the US is on record, through its UN ambassador, saying it does not accept the findings of the UN re Israel's War Crimes.

I for one believe in a world free of nuclear weapons. Iran should not get them and Israel should not have them. Open all sites to the IAEA.

War Crimes MUST be prosecuted. Israel and the Bush Administration must be prosecuted for War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity.

You're right, of course. There were suggestions from the Obama Administration last spring that perhaps Israel should open doors of its (considerable) nuclear arsenal to international inspectors, and perhaps sign nuclear pacts, as IAEA signatories have done. That idea died a quick, mean death.

Why the hostility to Hillary? Harridan in chief? C'mon... That is unnecessary to this discussion.

The SoS is always the point on issues like this. Why undermine this one by calling her names? Her job is tough enough without backbiting from her own side.

This is not an easy issue. Let's let her do her work and see whether she succeeds. Whether she does so or not, 'harridan' is unhelpful to our cause.

The term "crippling sanctions" is her's; she would not only cut off gasoline, but block Iran's access to international finance. Far from Washington, in those wedges of the cosmos where rational thinking is prized, blockades as severe as this are tantamount to declarations of war. It's unlikely the rest of the world, long wearied by our self-destructive gunslinging, will go for this. So, not from want of trying, the Secretary of State's dreams of reducing Iran to status of vassal state at least will be postponed. I absolutely despise everything she's doing.

Curt, you are one of the best writers on the web...not just this little cafe, I mean on the entire web. Greenwald is goooooooood and there still are decent opinion writers on the newspaper opinion pages, but they are worried about posturing and such. Not Greenwald of course, but you get my drift.

This is a GREAT POST about a most serious subject, and this line is pure gold. You see, you can get me laughing on the most serious of subjects. Where is H.L Mencken anyway?

Right back at you, dd. Coming from you, that is high praise, indeed. Today, H.L. Menchen would be writing movies. Better dough, y'know.

Oddly, the initial reports were that the US had no idea this second site existed. Now, anonymous sources are saying they knew FOR YEARS...

Something doesn't add up.

I err on the side that the initial report was correct. It is much easier to say you've known after the fact... this second clandestine site would have been exploited by Bush Jr. without a doubt.

The US intel community has a vested interest in pretending to know everything all the time. It justifies their "budget."

I do think SOMEBODY knew (cough... Mossad... cough) and played it like a well-timed Ace in the hole.
