"They must think you're STUPID"
But on a purely visceral level, something about this statement from Obama rang warning bells to me:
"And suddenly he's the change agent? Ha. He says, 'I'm going to tell those lobbyists that their days of running Washington are over.' Who is he going to tell? Is he going to tell his campaign chairman, who's one of the biggest corporate lobbyists in Washington? Is he going to tell his campaign manager, who was one of the biggest corporate lobbyists in Washington?"
"I mean, come on, they must think you're stupid," Obama said as the crowd laughed and cheered.
It's not an overreach in the sense that it's inaccurate. No, I'd say in fact that with the Palin pick McCain has all but announced he's waging a lowest common denominator campaign. And it's really not unfair, either. Palin & Co. are being blatantly deceitful about her record as a "reformer".
But there's just something about his use of the word "stupid" that's gnawing at the back of my mind. I can't exactly identify it. Could it be something that seems inconsistent with the general character of the campaign Barack is running? Could it be the fear of it being turned back around on him?
I really can't say, but it just seems a little... off.
