Seeing the pitch forks in hand by the virtual "mob" Grassley calls for mass "Harry Carey"
I am stunned and shocked that Senator Grassley from the civil State of Iowa, a Bona Fide self-righteous "Jesus Saves" follower has called for the "suicide" by the AIG [and possibly other barons of Wall Street]. Is Grassley patronizing the growing "populist" mob virtually brewing in the countryside and "Main Streets" of America or inciting it?
Well this much is certain, these corporate types, the capitalist oligarchy where quiet fiscal cronyism and corruption is the actual unwritten "By-Laws" that govern their secret alliances forged in MBA Schools and country clubs are not going to have a soul to commit them to self-inflicted mortal wounds. I should know I used to "place" them, as in executive search and when the deals came down to the final negotiations they all were uninterested in actually having any form of reciprocal "merit pay" and knowingly seeking to grab their advantage.
These types feel entitled---period. They are no different than the legendary mindsets cast in Shakespeare comedies or tragedies, yes the Prince John's from the fables of "Robin Hood". This is the modern plutocracy, made of marble [banking] castles and armies of accountants and financial analysts virtually swashbuckling through hordes of other people's financial statements as if it is the fruit of their labors.
This is just the beginning folks. I still read the Hedge Fund newsletters and the future is not what is was from 1982 to 2000, nor is it going to be like 1948 to 1970. Don't worry about inflation---deflation will be the by word and these guys know it. Get what they can now, raid the treasuries like pirates and hunker down in the Bahamas. But no one is going to do the Japanese samurai code for these guys don't have a conscience.
What Grassley is doing is trying to save his own "phoney baloney job" as paraphrased by the fictional Governor in the movie "Blazing Saddles". So here is the deal folks, we need to call in the marines, the legal marines and not the Jag Corps but real prosecutors and real investigations into each one of them. Not just in Wall Street but throughout America where the money trail led, those mortgage brokers who signed off on "stated incomes" and bogus appraisals, the investment counselors who hid incomes in foreign banks and the investment bankers who knew they were part of the largest Ponzi Scheme.
No we don't need some "Hari-kiri" we need to know who got what, when and how. Who stole our country?

Just quibbles here... It's hara-kiri, roughly meaning "cutting the stomach", or more properly seppuku, which refers to the ceremonial act, complete with a second standing behind with a katana, to slice off the suicide's head and thus end the agony.
And "Harry Carey"? Don't know who that is. Harry Caray was a legendary sports broadcaster, of course.

That's a pretty funny typo--I figured you were making a joke. "HOLY COW, AIG!" Heh, heh.

RWN--do not worry about the Old Grouch (I never or hardly ever capitalize 'the') and his manner since he is a member of the Intelligentsia.
However, onto your subject. I noted in another blog today that the repubs are now chiming into the Democratic mantra that rich people who steal are very bad people. But the repubs are hypocrites and their purpose in life is to keep the rich rich at all costs since the rich have stolen most of what they have anyway.
The Dems are supposed to act, to do something about this situation and not just talk about it.

Intelligentsia? Me?
As for doing something rather than talking about it, I wonder if the Wall St. world has been such a Republican province for so long that the Dems are kind of "at sea" in dealing with it. There appear to be too many surprises coming from inside that sick, twisted cabal. I suspect we will see as much of the corruption and fraud rooted out as can be found.
Then again, the Democratic Party has not shown itself to have an excess of vision in recent years. And now that they have a President in place who can inspire with a vision, he's stuck leading a party of policy detail fanatics.

Are we back to keeping the battle lines drawn? Come on, Dick, the world of politics in America isn't that back and white. Plenty of democrats these last thirty years helped the rich get richer or were part of the crowd themselves. Bill Clinton was hardly a fan of the common (wo)man.

I'm pretty sure that Bill Clinton is a fan of every woman, common or not.
That aside, you're absolutely correct that we shouldn't delude ourselves into thinking that Democratic congresscritters don't also cater to the rich. They're probably the worst party there is when it comes to doing so, except for the Republicans, I suppose. ;)
(In case it's not clear, that's supposed to be a riff on Churchill's comment about democracy being the worst form of government, except that I'm allowing that 3rd parties are probably better, although I'll grant that's exactly because they are 3rd parties.)

He is most likely a fan, personally, but his administration certainly wasn't in many respects. I totally agree that republicans have been the standard bearers for the Rich and the Rabidly Religious, but we really need to hold both parties accountable for marching us down this road to insolvency as a country.
Given the direction of the GOP these days under Rush and Steele, I am not all that confident they will ever wake up. The last time a national party was so recalcitrant was the Whigs, which gave birth to the republican party to begin with as a more "progressive" counter to the democrats.
History is a wasted commodity in this country, almost as much as people.

Well I will tell you Jason, nobody is doing much now. I am not real happy about my side's performance.
I was interested to see Santelli out there again. I mean he must represent fully .001% of the sentiment in this country. And it looks like if nothing else, the republicans and democrats are all yelling about the same thing. It is nice that something brings the parties together.
And to be fair to you Jason, it is not all Republicans that are hypocrites. But you know that the right wing of the party is about all that is left in leadership. On some issues Maine's two senators, Senator Spector, the Iowan, and a few more will sit down and discuss issues.
There are an awful lot of National Republicans who are mimicking rush, sean, glenn, orally and savage.
We have nuts. We have lefties who believe that w sent the planes into NYC or blew up the towers or whatever. Just plain nuts.
But that is enough of that. You do know that w made me so despondent over this decade. And I do tend to fire it up, as it were.
You have a good day Jason. High forties today, sunshine that will not quit, snow melting...it is a beautiful day in the tundra.

Agreed on all counts, DD. I saw a story today that Palin is the new standard bearer for the GOP. WTF?
This country is clearly in some serious trouble when one of its major political parties continues to be in the hands of rabid ideologues, after thirty years of piss-poor performance and steady erosion of most Americans' standard of living as a legacy. Likewise, the dems have been controlled by the same representatives for at least as long because we can't seem to get rid of incumbents, yet their complicity (or at least an inability to live up to their ideals) has all of sudden disappeared in the wake of Obama's victory.
How the hell will we fix anything if we can't find an institutional memory that lasts for more than ten years?
You have a great day as well! The weather in DC is cloudy but at least the bitter cold seems to have gone away for now. I can see spring just around the corner.

The Cancervatives are fomenting dischord for its own sake. Instability is their friend since they are out of power. They will do anything and everything they can to obstruct and derail anything Team Obama tries to do. Not having a decent education, having been the Children Left Behind, they fail to realize that if this all collapses, there will be no winners in our lifetime, and by that I mean anyone born before I put the period at the end of this sentence, and probably a few million born after I end the sentence as well. Stupid Zom-Bushes!!!

Most of it was legal. It was a lack of regulation that got us in this mess. Unfortunately, the pirates already made off with the booty, and we're left holding the bag.

I cannot recall the passage from a Plato narrative but I do recall that "winds of change" meaning winds of government change cannot protect the affluent from hording his riches behind his walls.
Meaning---yes it was legal in the technical terms but that is what Enron said when they stole little widows money and then after it was exposed it was not.
Let them look into it with a magnifying glass and actually see what was legal and what was not.

I think we know pretty well who stole the country. So, in agreement with you, let's go get the bastards and get them now, seize all their assets, throw them in jail and let them rot. And let that be a lesson to any would be capitalist predators who dare carry out such an audacious caper in the future! What we need is a revolution. I just hope that when people realize it, that it isn't already too late.
