Playing the immigration card in NY-20

I'm a resident of NY-20, John Sweeney's district. It's a funny district, tending to vote Republican with occasional pockets of Democrats. It is, I think, mostly anti-tax small government right rather than rascist wingnut right, which makes Sweeney's new campaign materials a little odd.

We got a Sweeney flyer in the mail the other day -- he's gone full tilt wingnut anti-immigrant looney on us. It makes no sense; this is upstate NY and we don't have a lot of immigrants, other than maybe local university students from overseas who might decide they want to stay around, and I don't see how a flyer like this energizes much of anyone in these parts. But he's gone and done it. I'm hearing he may be in trouble; maybe he has bad consultants telling him this is what he needs to do, but I have to think that if there were many typical, not terribly well informed voters who were going to default into voting for Sweeney without thinking about it, this might get there attention -- and not in a good way for Sweeney.

I put the flyer in the burn pile, but it probably isn't gone yet. Maybe I'll dig it out and post details at some point.

I'd be interested in what is in the flyer. I'm sort of nosying around the campaigns of NY Republicans running for Congress and I thought Sweeney's might be interesting.

Do you know much about any of the other Republicans running for Congress in your neck of the woods?

The only one here on Long Island is Peter King.

Unfortunately, my wife was very efficient about burning the contents of the burn pile, so it was too late to retrieve the flyer.

The gist of it, though, was in line with the extremist anti-immigrant positions of the right. He seems to be very concerned about his opponent, which surprised me because I hadn't had that much sense that any headway was being made. I guess people around are more annoyed about his fundraising ski junkets to Colorado and his wife's fundraising "commission" than I realized.

There are some other challenges going on in the Hudson Valley, but I haven't really been keeping track. I'll start poking around.

Thanks. I just did a post for another blog, Room 8, about Sweeney that got lost when I pushed "preview". I'm hoping the site owner can retreive it. If not, I'll do it over.

A proposed $1 million earmark for the Readnet Foundation to put an online literacy program in place in Hudson NY stinks. Looks like Robin D. Hubbard, president of the foundation, made donations to Sweeney just to get the earmark.

If you are interested, I'll send you the link when my post is online.

Yes, please, I'd like to see that.

RW, I made a couple of comments here in the TPM Cafe about John E. Sweeney's ties to Robin Hubbard and the Readnet Foundation with a link to my post at Room 8. Room 8 is devoted to New York politics and an affiliate of the Sunlight Foundation.

LOL - I didn't know until today that Sweeny was one of the thugs who pounded on the doors and windows of the Miami Election Board in 2000. Watching those well-dressed and well-educated bullies disrupt a federal election made me furious. I was stunned that they weren't arrested on the spot.

Now I am determined to dig up as much dirt on Sweeney as I can!

I forgot - I found an October 2004 Mid-Hudson Library System newsletter online with an announcement about Sweeney and the Readnet program.

Is there a chance you could ask someone at the library about how the online Readnet literacy program has worked out to date?

I have a friend in hudson who may well be able to shed some light on the subject. I've dropped him a note.

Thanks.

My friend doesn't have any info right now. I'm researching the situation. It may take a week or so; I'm in Florida for a little bit (30 year high school reunion and a little disney time.)
