Reflections On Ohio, Continued

This is getting downright spooky, and there was enough in the comments that it was worth elevating.  In a response to what I wrote, artappraiser said:

I am thinking the way you have written this, the tense you use, you are seeing this as a new development. But I suspect it is not. Most of what I read sounds to me like this is the steadfast 1/3 right wing of the country that has been there since at least the 80's, the conservative talk radio audience etc. One of the reasons why is what you describe here hit me as dejas vus allover again as to what happened with the Clinton presidency...Scaife et. al. plot to get back at him for winning, developed into riling up the right wing machine, developed into riling up the conservative 1/3 of the country that shows up steadfast and true in nearly every darn poll on the matter, developed into a distracting impeachment. Nothing new here?

Oh, but there is.  Exhibit B:

The first big difference between now and the Clinton years is the massive economic unrest and upheaval. The country is headed into the shitter for a while (at least a year), and I have a feeling that any borad-based turnaround will be slow, but steady. The rhetoric will be matched with economic desperation in a manner that this country has not seen for a long time, and the risk of violence is much stronger. There will always be folks like Limbaugh and Hewitt. They are much more dangerous when their listeners are completely destitute and they can easily blame the black guy.

Second, although it's true that the Delay conservatives hated Clinton with a passion, they never questioned the legitimacy of his election in the office (as opposed to his remaining there). He was still the president of the United States, and they had to respect the office, if not the man. The difference with Obama is that by setting his election up as some sort of usurpation, there is no reason to follow his orders or policies. To me, the two situations are related, but distinguishable in fundamental ways. The situation we are in now is much more dangerous.

The mob is there, and the torches are lit.

Reflections on Ohio

Living where I do, surrounded by folks who think the same way about politics, it's strange to go to a swing state where McCain and Obama signs live side by side.  The folks that are up in the air about him are undecided based on his experience.  Those that really oppose his candidacy fall into two camps: (1) anti-tax affluent folks for whom the last 8 years have been pretty good; or (2) those who focus on Bill Ayres with a healthy dose of ACORN-based voter fraud.

This is fast becoming the right wing's entire intellectual foundation. The point of these attacks is not to win the election; all those except the most delusional know the cause is just about lost. Their point is to de-legitimize his election, and excuse acts of hate and violence.  Back in the good old days of the site about a year ago (we'll never know because the post was eaten by TPM 1.1), I was really scared about the damage that BushCo would cause when he was on his way out the door and could suffer no political cost for the harm he inflicted.  Iraq, Afghanistan, Abu Grahib, rendition, climate change, Katrina, voter suppression, politicization of the DOJ--the list is endless.  These are horrendous (and immoral) policy positions, but a new president can undo many of them, and quickly.  The violence that lurks just under the discourse (and comes out only in the "kill him" at a rally) will take much longer to eradicate.

TPM 2. whatever

I appreciate the changes to the web site--I really do.  What I most appreciate is the fact that each time I clicked "recommend" on a post (to find out who recommended the post in the first place) I was allowed to recommend myself.  When I looked at my new dashboard, all I could think was "Gee whiz I'm a putz."  So could someone kindly either (a) make it impossible to recommend your own posts; or (b) tell me how to "unreccommend" them?
