Resources and Articles on Torture

Hi All,

I have made an attempt to pull together various resources on torture. SO much has come up in discussions that I thought I would make an attempt to capture those in one place. I KNOW that this is not complete, and I apologize in advance for leaving anyone out or missing any thing significant. Please feel free to add resources and articles in the comments. I will try to move them into the post.

What a resource! Thanks, Rowan! Much appreciated.

You're Welcome.

Really nice job.

New Washington Post article on attempts by former Bush officials trying to water down the soon to be released DOJ ethics report on torture.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/05/05/AR2009050502219.html?hpid=topnews

Here's a passage from the Post article that is baffling:

"The memos, drafted in 2002 and 2005, offered support for waterboarding, slamming prisoners against a wall and other techniques that critics have likened to torture."

Critics have LIKENED to torture?

Like TheraP says, This is an important resource.

This is great. I finished the memo list and have read more than half of this already.

THIS IS A LOT OF WORK.

Geeeeez I can just bookmark it. The next time I get this crap about 3 memos from OLC being the only evidence....I will just send them here.

THE END

user-pic

Yeah, it took some effort, but so much has come up in the posts and comments that it seemed a good idea to consolidate it somewhere.

user-pic

It was an excellent idea, Rowan. Bookmarked and Recommended.

user-pic

dd, make sure you read Interrogating Torture in the New Yorker.

It confirms everything you wrote the other day about the shameful prosecutions of the prison guards in the Abu Ghraib pictures, while the real criminals in the Bush administration have gone free.

Yet it became almost immediately apparent—and has been confirmed repeatedly in the years since... that the Abu Ghraib photographs showed not individuals run amok but American policy in action.
There can be no restoration of the national honor if we continue to scapegoat those who took the fall for an Administration—and for us all.

user-pic

Thanks Rowan - bookmarked!

user-pic

This is a great resource, Rowan. Thanks so much!

user-pic

Thanks for keeping track Rowan. Much appreciated.

You may have this, but if not...

Here's http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2009/05/01-9

"Psychologists Told CIA Waterboarding Was Safe" by MATTHEW COLE, May 1.09

user-pic

This is a "bit" of a tangential issue, Rowan, but I'm adding it to the list because the torture memos are so central to what occurred and the lawyers have been found by OPR to have committed "professional misconduct" - the worst finding they can conclude, within their guidelines:

http://www.usdoj.gov/opr/polandproc.htm

I just posted a bit on that at TPM Muckraker here:

http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/05/it_looks_like_the_bushies.php#comment-3458764

user-pic

This is NOT yet the OPR report!!!

Just their policies and procedures. We await the actual report. And I'm guessing it won't be long if they've already leaked the specific findings. (I just don't want someone getting confused - and I'm sorry if I confused you here.)

user-pic

Thanks for the link TheraP. Your great comment was followed by a drolltroll so Rowan and I had some fun in bad taste over there.

Awaiting the actual report too. Rachael had a good take on it tonight with General Sanchez.

user-pic

Yeah, I saw how quickly the trolls followed me. But the two of you were outstanding!!! We all make a great team here! :-)

user-pic

Added to the drolltroll thread.

user-pic

Thanks and recommended, Rowan.

user-pic

Ouch.
When you have somebody creating a compendium on a web site, maybe the web site needs to open up a compendium.
This issue is very large.

user-pic

Resources above this comment have been added to the main list.

user-pic

A somewhat more abstract examination:

http://tinyurl.com/cddqhu

The url is Elaine Scarry's The Body in Pain at books.google.com.

It's not an easy read; and frankly: what the Republicans are doing, today; along with 1) what they did under Bush and 2) the Democrats aiding and abetting them then and now

is using the silence that is pain, and the ensuing obscurity, to make more opaque their acts.

You can read page 9 through roughly page 13 to see Scarry's verbiage on this central point.

user-pic

I have to reiterate my gratefulness for all this work.

As if it means anything, I hereby award you the Knightly Blog of the Day Award at this here TPMCafe Site, given to all of you from all of me.

This is important to TheraP, to me and to many others in our little group interested in this subject.

Always, always document. ha

Good, good job Rowan.

user-pic

(Gee, blush)

All I did was sort through the great posts and comments (and a few other sources) to try to get in one place the resources that folks had dug up. It seemed a shame to have those scattered across the TPM landscape and therefore likely to become lost in the new growth.

I take a humble bow.

user-pic

I suggest you include a couple of propublica html links (you have some pdf links to specific docs):

http://www.propublica.org/tag/missing+memos which lists articles

and

http://www.propublica.org/special/missing-memos
which lists many though not all memos in a nice chart.

Not just directly related to torture, but including many torture related memos.
