Challenging Our Understanding
This video is guaranteed to challenge assumptions about the differences between humans and our companions on the planet. This video is taken from http://fun.mivzakon.co.il/flash/video/2344/2344.html. I have no information about this video. A friend sent it to me. It is remarkable in a number of ways.
Addendum: Upon further searching, the elephant is apparently in Thailand, and more pictures are viewable at Exotic World Gifts

Rowan, This was sent to me a while ago. I did not know what to make of it. Amazing. Just sat transfixed through the whole thing.

Me too Obey. This speaks volumes about at least this elephant. This is complex artistically and conceptually on so many different levels. I can't do it. Not saying much I guess, but I'm an average human being.
I have thought for a very long time that elephants (as well as other species) are at least equal to us in most regards. However, this is communicating in "our" medium. Which is certainly more than we can do in theirs.

This elephant kicks ass.
Once we're gone, I hope elephants are around to fight it out for planetary supremacy with the cockroaches. Maybe we could even help tilt the playing field slightly pro-elephant by teaching the cockroaches about derivatives.
Whaddya mean, "We already did."?

Rowan, on the animal intelligence issue. I linked to this

in an earlier post. I like the take on a lot of animal behavior as not necessarily 'equal' to ours, but different. So we tend to miss it. Or explain it away. But there is more and more evidence coming of unbelievable problem-solving behavior, forethought, memory, self-conception, that is really eroding what remains of our superiority complex away.

I agree with you. My experience and belief is that it is more different. After all, various creatures see/hear/smell in different ranges from humans. However, we live in a vary speciest culture. It would do us a lot of good to realize that we have equals on this planet - IMHO.
