From the Mouths of Babes

I am a fifth grade teacher in Utah.  I have been teaching my students from day one about the election process in anticipation of these final 2 weeks of the election.  I feel the importance of this election is something fifth graders should be aware of.  In class we have been running elections for class president, and learning about what electoral votes are, how many are needed to become President, and tracking polls from the beginning of the school year.  I have also required my students to watch the debates, and discuss them with their parents, and write a summary of the 3 debates and what they thought.

Today, we had a brainstorming session where I put up one of the candidates names, and then asked for one word responses from each student as to what they thought of the candidates based on impressions from the debated and advertisements we have looked at.  When I put up McCain's name, I some responses like "brave", and "fighter".  I got more responses like "old", "mean", "wrong", and "confused".  More than 2 to 1 were negative responses.  When I put up Obama's name, I got overwhelming positive responses such as "caring", "generous", "nice", and "leader".  These responses were about 3 to 1.  Remember these are kids in one of the reddest states in the Union.  I was very surprised that my 5th graders from Utah had more positive thoughts about Obama than McCain.

Thanks for sharing!!
That's a great story and I find myself smiling.

...then, from personal experience, I remembered some Mormon families I knew growing up and I felt a little nervous... ...those kids were "coached" at home. I know this because I witnessed it.

Still, all things being equal, it sounds like you've been doing a TERRIFIC job as their Teacher - Thank You! - and it sounds like they are likely sincere in their responses. Congrats!

Well, thank you for the compliment. I am just trying to show these kids that when it comes to any election, they shouldn't vote for the party, vote for who you agree with. I dont care if they like McCain, I just want them to be informed. I know it is difficult for most, if not all, 5th graders to grasps the important subjects, but when it comes to demeanor, and how a person carries themselves, kids can tell. And this exercise shows what most of us here know. It was just awesome that these kids from a very red state picked up on it. I know parents have a huge influence on their kids. But, to show how this is working, I took a pool right after the conventions of who the kids wanted to be the Pres. it was 89-4 for McCain, some kids weren't sure. Now, after requiring them to watch the debates, I polled again, and the kids voted 65-30, still for McCain, but if I can get just 10 kids to think for themselves, I feel I have done a pretty good job.

Thanks again!
