Geography Refresher: Iran, The Middle of the Middle East
by Ron Powell
Secret nuclear facilities have been revealed in Qom, Iran. Failure to fully report the existence of these facilities, which as President Obama said," are inconsistent with a peaceful program", to the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) and permit the required inspection, will bring sanctions and other dire consequences.

With a line drawn in the sand, and an October 1st deadline for a meeting with the UN Security Council ( United States, Russia, China, France, England) and Germany (P5+1) regarding compliance, Iran will be at the top of the news for the next week and beyond...A refresher in geography seemed to be in order.

As a geography buff, I am puzzled.
Like many countries, Iran is in the middle of something. But is it Middle East?
To place Iran in the middle of a zone that extends to the borders of Egypt, Ron extended the zone to include Pakistan, which is normally placed in "Indian Subcontinent" and "-stans" of Central Asia.
Ordinarily, "Middle East" is either "Western Asia", hence not Central Asia and not Indian subcontinent, or Western Asia and North Africa. So Iran is the most eastern country of Western Asia.
In similar vein, "Secret nuclear facilities" are only somewhat secret and somewhat nuclear (meaning, they are not particularly military, but seem to be a form of dispersal of disclosed facilities to undisclosed location, which may be reasonable if some countries openly threaten to bomb the disclosed locations).

Your point is well taken, Saladin: Iran appears to be situated in Middle America.
I can't imagine what will happen when Kansas learns of its new neighbors.

Regime change: It's not just for Breakfast anymore.
The fighting in the previous civil war started in that neck of the woods.
Past results are no guarantee of future results.
