Sarah Palin spent $50,000 redoing Wasilla Mayor's Office - Illegally!
This didn't get a lot of play when it first appeared back in September, but obviously Sarah "Spendacuda" Palin is no stranger to pointless extravagance:
Four years later, the ambitious Palin won the Wasilla mayor's office -- after scorching the "tax and spend mentality" of her incumbent opponent. But Carney, Palin's estranged former mentor, and others in city hall were astounded when they found out about a lavish expenditure of Palin's own after her 1996 election. According to Carney, the newly elected mayor spent more than $50,000 in city funds to redecorate her office, without the council's authorization."I thought it was an outrageous expense, especially for someone who had run as a budget cutter," said Carney. "It was also illegal, because Sarah had not received the council's approval."According to Carney, Palin's office makeover included flocked, red wallpaper. "It looked like a bordello."
At least the RNC made sure her wardrobe selections were professionally vetted.
It's worth remembering, too, that back in 1996, Sarah Palin's role model was Ivana Trump, not Dick Cheney:
Alaskans Line Up For a Whiff of IvanaSarah Palin, a commercial fisherman from Wasilla, told her husband on Tuesday she was driving to Anchorage to shop at Costco. Instead, she headed straight for Ivana. And there, at J.C. Penney's cosmetic department, was Ivana, the former Mrs. Donald Trump, sitting at a table next to a photograph of herself. She wore a light-colored pantsuit and pink fingernail polish. Her blonde hair was coiffed in a bouffant French twist."We want to see Ivana," said Palin, who admittedly smells like salmon for a large part of the summer, "because we are so desperate in Alaska for any semblance of glamour and culture."
Sigh. It's all just too, too - poignant. Who could have known back then that the wishes of a poor commercial-fishing, moose-field-dressing, glamour-craving Wasillian would one day come **magically** true, thanks to John "Prince Charming" McCain and the fashion pixies of the RNC.

You forgot the best part:

Even in Wasilla, Republicans believe in the Unitary Executive. Wallpapering one's office is included among the "inherent powers" of the mayoralty.
