George F. Will is, for a man who is a rabidly dogmatic corporate apologist and a pompous jackass, a columnist who once in a GREAT while actually writes a great column. He is an intelligent man. Hence, I usually at least scan over his columns to see if he might just have sworn off the Kool-Aid for a week. But...

When he wants too (i.e. most of the time) he can be the world's biggest charlatan; an utter sophist. I remember one column he wrote during the lead-up to the Iraq war. Of course he followed marching orders and compared not invading Iraq to Munich '38. (Like you 'appease' a government you don't like by not invading its territory.) An absolutely absurd analogy. Yes, his voice was only one of so many conservative gasbags pounding the drums for war, but George, aren't you like Mr. Erudite? I mean, you do know that in 1939 Germany had the world's second largest economy and was the world's second producer of steel. Iraq? Before we invaded, their economy was about the size of Alexandria, Virginia, a tony suburb outside D.C. where the boob may well reside.

Robert

Howzat for GRUDGING admiration?

Good God, what an AVALANCHE of f*cking cynicism. The future Chief of Staff doesn't hesitate, just steps up and does the right thing--a class move which should be applauded--and... WTF? No Emanuel was not to blame, but he took it upon himself to cover for his 'Archie Bunkerstein' father; this is to be commended. Yet so much of what I see in this thread are posts by those itching to be admitted to the 'Caustic Snide Bastard Hall of Fame.' Cynicism has its limits people.

Yes, I too am exasperated by the phrase "Reagan Democrats." What exactly is it suppose to mean? For starters, Reagan won in two successive landslides. Were the media actually surprised that this necessarily involved a considerable number of registered Democrats voting for him? Second, they talk about Reagan Democrats as if, eight years after Clinton and twenty-four years after Reagan's re-election, they are still some sort of identifiable voting bloc. The longhand version would seem to be 'Democrats who usually vote Republican.' Well, I'm a vegetarian, but I usually have a steak for dinner. "Reagan Democrats" obviously describes independents and moderate Republicans who may occasionally crossover, but tell that to the label-happy media.

Gravity, why didn't you just stay home, jump up and down three times, whilst chanting "Ooowoogah-Woogah! That would have effected the same amount of f*cking change as your voting for Nader, and save you a trip to the polls.

If the US had a parliamentary system of government in this country, then your vote would make sense; Naderites would win a few seats; Gore in 2000 would have been compelled to form a coalition government. But we don't. Your vote for Nader only puts people like Bush in power.

I would bet my testicles that if there were a comprehensive scientific survey, it would find that Nader voters are smarter than the national average, and probably by a fair margin. But...

I can find no better example (with all due respect) of smart, even very smart people behaving like idiots than the Nader crowd.

P.S. Senator, has Obama stopped selling top secret information to al-Quaeda?

Gary,

Your point is hardly invalid. E.g., John Edwards--while constantly reminding us all that he was a mill worker's son--never hid the fact that he has a net worth of around $27 million.

But...

Since when have the Republican's cared about hypocrisy?

Yet really, I think you sum it all up with your close: "But there are more important things to discuss."
