Obviuosly you are not alone in your feelings about Sharpton, as I am not alone in feeling that Reagan and Goldwater were race-baiters.

I don't feel Sharpton was a major player in the Gates issue. perhaps the news sources that you frequent presented a different picture. You really believe that Shapton's Tawana Brawley support in 1987 was responsible for the shift in White votes?

From 1948 to 1984 the Southern states, traditionally a stronghold for the Democrats, became key swing states, providing the popular vote margins in the 1960, 1968 and 1976 elections. During this era, several Republican candidates expressed support for states' rights, which some critics claim was a signal of opposition to federal enforcement of civil rights for blacks and intervention on their behalf, including passage of legislation to protect the franchise.

In the 1972 election Nixon swept the South, winning more than 70 percent of the popular vote in the Deep South states and Florida. He won over 60 percent of the votes in the other states of the former Confederacy. Despite his appeal to Southern whites, Nixon parlayed a wide perception as a moderate into wins in other states. He took a solid majority in the electoral college. He was able to appear moderate to most Americans because the Southern strategy referred to integration obliquely through references to states' rights and busing, issues that were emotionally charged for voters in the South. This tactic was later described as "dog-whistle politics."

Was the Sharpton effect retroactive?

In pointing out the "set back race relations" phrase, I was noting that particular phrase seems limited to actions by African-Americans? Have you seen the phrase used frequently for Whites?

....I mention Sharpton primarily because of the Brawley case which set back race relations, not to mention racially smearing a white law enforcement officer.

Do you think Ronald Reagan set back race relations by starting his campaign in Philadelphia, Miss? Did the GOP Southern Strategy set back race relations? Do you believe that Sharpton was more responsible for delivering the South to the GOP, or was it LBJ a Democratic President who signed the Civil Rights Act?

The reason that I ask these questions is that a meme seems to be what particular African-Americans have done to "set back race relations". I haven't seen the same term used for Whites. Barry "States Rights" Goldwater, a GOP hero, is viewed just as negatively as Sharpton in some quarters. Did Goldwater set back race relations?

Note that I did not single you out above. I was asking if the GOP could expect a damaged image on racial issues because the party does not address the racist fringe.

and
....And whether I’m being blind or not here, does it give someone else the right to judge me as racist?

Who get's to decide what is the "best" case of race bias?? Driving a luxury car and being pulled over for "Driving While Black" is not a lynching. Should African-American drivers not complain?

If the rank and file of the GOP does not directly address the gun-toters, birthers, take back my country, watermelon and monkey art carrying fringe of their party, are we to assume that they are just blind or that they agree with what is being done?

You mention Al sharpton almost as a four letter word. Using Al Sharpton to discredit a case is no different than using the term "racist".
Sharpton has been ridiculed by hardcore rappers because the Rev objects to the objectification of Black women in hardcore rap? Do Sharpton's speaking out make the criticism of misogynistic lyrics wrong?

In the Duke case, the Durham DA led the charge. Nancy Grace was far more harsh than either Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton in the Duke case, but Al Sharpton bothers you. Why do you think Sharpton is more of a target for you than Nancy Grace?
