Marcia Stirman: "Why I'm a Republican"
The chairwoman of an Otero County, New Mexico, Republican women's group spewed forth her ugly self critique yesterday in a letter to the editor of The Alamogordo Daily News:
I read in today's paper what a woman wrote explaining why she's a Democrat. Let me tell you why I'm not. I'm a Republican because:
I believe in a sovereign God who sometimes gives us what we deserve.
I believe Muslims are our enemies.
I believe in life. A baby is not just a fetus, but a living being no matter where it resides.
I believe there is a good reason for the death penalty.
I believe in fiscal responsibility, for the government and for us.
I believe the government is way too big and rife with greed and corruption.
I believe in the truth. People believe lies because it's much easier than finding the truth.
I believe in personal responsibility. That includes spanking your children.
I believe American women should raise their own children and American men should be men enough to pay for children they've produced.
I believe a man and woman make marriage. Period.
I believe in America first and foremost and we ought to take care of our own people, our own land, and illegal aliens should go home.
I believe in guns and knowing how to use them properly.
I believe war is a fact of life and we should always win.
I believe in lower taxes. I know how to spend money better than Congress any day of the week.
I believe in voter ID.
I believe there is a moderate and a socialist in this election.
I agree with a two-party system, but Obama isn't a messiah or a democrat.He's a Muslim socialist. (emphasis added)
If I wanted to compose the canons of why I am NOT a republican, I don't think I could have done a better job. Nice piece of self-indictment, Ms. Stirman.

Her view is intolerant, from first to last. And you are intolerant of fact in your ignorance of the meaning of "liberal".
The Founders of our country were LIBERALS. The essence of LIBERALISM is the First Amendmnet, which exists to protect unpopular speech (popular speech needs no protection). That is, LIBERALISM is FREEDOM OF CONSCIENCE AND BELIEF. It IS the philosophy of tolerance because it allows expression even of INtolerance. It even allows belief in and expression of its enemy FASCISM.
Ms. Stirman's view is ANTI-Liberal. It is ANTI-Muslim -- without exception. It is ANTI-"socialist -- unless one is a wealthy Wall St. mega-millionaire capitalist who FUCKS UP, in which case the taxpayer, who lost because of that fuck up, bails out the fuck up.
Stirman is for being bailed out, but not for bailing out others who aren't already sufficently wealthy to "pay their own way".
I won't accuse her -- or you -- of knowing anything not falsification, bigotry, let alone of actually THINKING.
And as is obvious from her "clarificaiton" of her unfounded bigotry against Muslims" -- aside from the fact that Obama is NOT Muslim -- "I don't trust them at all. They've sworn across the world that they are our enemies. Why we're trying to elect one is beside me."
She is absolutely closed minded against learning ANYTHING beyond or other than the FALSEHOODS she already "knows". And that is the essence of intolerance, of bigotry: No matter how many times she is told that Obama is NOT Muslim, she ignores that fact in order to persist in her UNFOUNDED AND REFUTED EXCUSE FOR HATING.
Go ahed: vote for your fellow racists on the basis that Stirman was called that she in fact and obviously is: a B-I-G-O-T.

A vote for McCain and for the type of ignorance displayed in the above list is not a vote for real conservative government or for gaining a rational conservative counterbalance to left-leaning governing policies. A vote for McCain is a vote for more neoconservative fascism that will destroy the Republic.

See Teddy Roosevelt, Ike or Abe. See Nixon on his good days or before the worms started eating his brain.
A true conservative government simply means a more measured approach to the change we need than is commonly found on the left. It should be the counterbalance to our liberal instincts in order to find a more sustainable path toward our national goals.
We haven't had a true conservative lead the republican party in decades.

No one is saying she can't, but if she really believes "...in fiscal responsibility, for the government and for us", I'm a little surprised she's a Republican. I can't remember the last time a Republican President signed a balanced budget, or had any plan to balance the budget or lower the national debt (other than through wishful thinking).
For that matter, she also believes "...that government is way too big and rife with greed and corruption.", though the Republican party has been in charge of the Executive branch for the last 8 years, and the Legislative Branch for 6 of the last 8 years (and for most of the preceding 6 years before then).
She also states "I believe in the truth. People believe lies because it's much easier than finding the truth". Certainly members of both parties lie or distort the truth, but the biggest political lie I can think of is a Republican Administration telling us we had to invade Iraq because Saddam had WMD.
I'm also puzzled by her statement that "I believe Muslims are our enemies" and what that has to do, or ought to do, with being a Republican. Certainly, Colin Powell doesn't agree. And I think it's worth quoting Powell in his Meet the Press interview last Sunday
And if Muslims are our enemies, why did Bush II launch the war from Kuwait? Although if she believes that approximately a billion or more people are our enemies, it would explain why she thinks war is inevitable.
Then there's the Muslim Socialist canard (which is an oxymoron is she's using Muslim as short-hand for al-Qaeda. Obama is a Christian and it's a Republican Administration that's nationalizing the banks. And I thought the Constitution said something about no religious tests for public office?
There are other statements she makes that don't really explain why she's a Republican (personal responsibility? Sarah Palin doesn't even buy her own clothes anymore).
In short, she didn't do a good job of explaining why she's a Republican. It comes across as a self-righteous, hate-filled screed.

If you look at the 2000 census data
So what can we really conclude: poor people are ignorant. Is that a surprise? I dunno. Aren't these the same people that the Dems are trying to get registered to vote? Do we really think that poor ignorant people are deeply thinking about their choices? Or are we just looking for people to cast their ballots along the ways we would like?
How would you feel if you saw someone picking on a retarded person? Are your proud that you are smarter than someone so incredibly ignorant? Criticizing this letter is like shooting fish in a barrel. I bet it's possible to find racist, ignorant Democrats -- hell, we keep hearing they hide in PA... they shouldn't be so hard to find! Ok. I'll be more specific this time.
The Census data was for that county -- that's why I provided the link. It is a very poor county -- so it is not surprising there is ignorance throughout. She represents that county. Therefore, it's likely she is about as ignorant as those she represents.
In any case, why pick her out as representative of *all* Republicans? Is she a national figure? Is she even a state leader?
You don't think we can find someone equally as stupid on the Dem side who is also very low on the totem poll?
My point is that if you want to debate the relative merits of a political philosophy, it might be more productive (or impressive) to take on a party leader or someone with more influence.
Otherwise, your case is about as convincing as when you can run intellectual rings around a retarded person.

If an idiot puts something out in public in an attempt to influence events, must the ensuing debate be restricted to other idiots? Should her letter exceed the bounds of her local paper, (or not) and make it to a wider audience, I think it would benefit all concerned to hear an intelligent analysis(?), dissection(?) of her thoughts. Most of all it might benefit her to learn the power of her own words by exposing herself as a fool.

The majority of low income Americans already vote Democratic in Presidential elections, and a much larger majority of upper income Americans vote Republican - see here, so I'm not sure I understand point of referring to the 2000 census (other than, when running for office, it's good to get as many votes as possible).
Also, since we have no way of knowing where the Chairwoman of the Otero County, New Mexico, Republican women's group falls in the income level, the census data isn't relevant.
Nor is comparing this woman to mentally disabled person. People who express opinions should expect to be criticized. Making excuses for why they shouldn't isn't any different than those who claim it's sexist to criticize Palin.
As for Ben Stein's article, when he isn't just reminiscing, his 3 most salient points are:
1. Karl Rove is the reason he's a Republican,
2. He's an economist who disagrees with the President's fiscal policy, yet he's still a Republican, and
3. The old canard about rich Democrats and working class Republicans
So aside from the trip down memory lane, his article isn't any more coherent Marcia Stirman's.

well this is to Marcia Stirman...first of all, if you say you believe in God...Then you are getting your facts wrong from your church...God hates war. he befriend anyone...that's why when you go to church, you always ask for forgiveness if you did something wrong. you should already know about the TENTH COMMANDMENTS:
1. I am the Lord thy God who have brought thee out of the house of bondage.
2.Thou shalt have no other gods besides me.
3.Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
4.Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy.
5.Honor thy Father and Mother.
6.Thou shalt not murder. (WAR-BAD)
7.Thou shalt not commit adultery.
8.Thou shalt not steal.
9.Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. (McCain/Palin ticket)
10.Thou shalt not covet.
Maybe that will refresh Marcia's memory..or she's just faking to be a God believer...God doesn't hate...he embraces every one.

wow...i just happened upon this online totally liberal TPM. I saw the link to Stirmans article on Drudge. I certainly agree with Stirman in most of her comments. they are certainly in-line with how this country became the greatest country in the history of the world. All because of God's blessing. So apparently you people who are so outraged with Stirman's points must be anit-gun, anti-life, big-government, want open-borders, anyone/anything can marry, and on down the list. I certainly do not say all Muslims hate the USA. But we see what is happening in Europe. Most recently in England, where Muslim law has now been added to English law....heaven help us to ever allow that to happen here. Our country was founded and prospered on Christian beliefs and principles. We are a Christian nation. I do not know if Obama is now Muslim, he did have an early Muslin backround. His 20 year church affiliation with the anti-Christian, anti-American church of Rev.Wright raises alot of questions. But Obama only gives "lip service" to being Christian. This is most obvious by his support of "infanticide", in which while in the Illinois senate he vote 4 different times, to various versions of the bill, to allow born alive babies to be left to die (as a result of a botched abortion). He said it would be too much of a burden to the mother...so kill it.
God's Word, the Bible, IS the moral compass. Once we stray from that, as our country is more and more, then the results follow. God wants obedience to his Word, for blessings to follow...not only "we all have to love one another, and feel good". Reading some of the responses to this article, it show people have not even read Gods' Word. Such as the statments that war is "bad" in the Ten Commandments. Why dont you read how God ORDERED war and its destructive consiquences in the Bible.
I know there is corruption in both parties, but overall the Republican party stands more for the values and morals our country was founded on. The Democratic party of the last 20 years, and its advocates, such as the ACLU, are the opposite. This is so obvious recently by all the underhanded things done to try to get Obama elected, such as the liberal group ACORN, outright lies by the liberal media, intimidation tactics, and on and on.
As for Palin, you liberals are afraid of her because she resonates with the average American. You are afraid she would want to embrace the principles this great country was founded on, if she is elected.
To finally end this...I do support most of what Stirman says, but I dont believe all Muslims are anti-American...but we must continue to fight Muslim extremism. No denying, Obama is a socialist. I have been to Eurpoe, I dont want our system to be anything like it. This is what Obama wants to change America to.

Thanks for taking the time to post.
A few brief points -
1. The Bible doesn't say "we all have to love one another, and feel good." In John 13:34-35, Christ says,
Jesus also says in Matthew 5:39, Granted, the book of Judges is pretty bloody. The Gospels? Yes, but not in the same way, if you get my drift.2. That thing about liberal bias? On this site, we always complain about its conservative bias. I guess it depends on your perspective.
3. I also get the sense that Obama, while a Christian, is no evangelical. That said, do you really think McCain is demonstrably more Christian, insofar as such a thing can be judged? I sure don't!
4. Your admission "I do not know if Obama is now Muslim" can only be explained by wilfull ignorance. If you don't care about the truth, how can you complain about things like media bias? How can you behave like this when you profess to believe in an all-knowing God? I feel sorry for you.

Oh and let me be *very* clear on this, lest you think it's just a partisan attack.
The entire reason people were leaving England and coming here in part because they wanted *freedom of religion*.
From the Wickster:
The Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, written in 1779 by Thomas Jefferson, proclaimed:
"[N]o man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place, or ministry whatsoever, nor shall be enforced, restrained, molested, or burthened in his body or goods, nor shall otherwise suffer, on account of his religious opinions or belief; but that all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinions in matters of religion, and that the same shall in no wise diminish, enlarge, or affect their civil capacities."
As an atheist, to me this also means FREEDOM FROM RELIGION. To you, this makes me a tool of Satan. To me, you look like a fool.
October 23, 2008 2:18 PM | Reply | Permalink
Actually, they didn't want freedom of religion as we would understand it.

Oh, dear. Now you know our dirty little secret. Lower New Mexico, south of I-40 is something of a Republican stronghold, with around a 3:1 majority over the Donks. Ms. Stirman has kindly revealed the beliefs she holds in her heart of hearts. Those beliefs insulate her from the reality of her life.
Alamogordo, New Mexico, population 35,000, is sited about 50 miles north of El Paso, Texas in the northern end of the Chijuajuan Desert. Local natural resources include White Sands National Monument and regular sand. Rainfall averages 3 inches per year. There are churches every few blocks and local merchants are being edged out by the Home Depot and Wal*Mart big box stores. During WWII Alamogordo prospered because the U.S. Gummint saw fit to use the surrounding desert to train bomber crews and to fire off the first atomic bomb in a place they could keep secret. So what keeps Alamogordo alive? Holloman Air Force Base with the Stealth Fighters, and White Sands Missile Range are the only reason. If government got a little bit smaller and closed the Air Base and Missile Range Ms. Stirman would be leading the protest. But being a Good Republican she lets her precious beliefs obfuscate reality.
She lives in the middle of a desert and is directly or indirectly dependent on the government, and would like to see that government become as small as possible except don't cut her off. The cowboy swagger independent republican rap is a cover story.

As a Republican, I want to answer this one. This woman is not a Republican, she's a fool. Saying Obama is a Muslim isn't Republican, it's being silly. And saying Muslims are our ennemies is not being a Republican, it's being an ignorant. And stating the will of God as reason number 1 for any political affiliation is not only stupid, but actually anti-American. Period. Some people, Republican and Democrat, should go back to school.

I don't know if anyone has this info yet, but I just talked to Marcia Stirman. Her # is listed : 575-437-9362 She answered the phone! Calling her is entertaining. However, be prepared I received approximately 20 "God Loves You'' or Jesus Loves you or a combination of the two when I was just trying to get an answer to why she is so intolerant, bigoted, and a liar.

So let's put this together
1. Muslims are my enemies
2. Obama is a Muslim
R-go:
Obama is my enemy.
So tell me you moron what should happen to Obama?
Should he be arrested or should he be killed?
Put up or shut up.

Ms. Stirman is my hero - she's brave enough to say all the things most Americans want to say.
I don't know who you people are that are bad-mouthing her, but you're definitely not people that love this country and what this country stands for.
God Bless Ms. Stirman for standing up to Obama and his leftist inner circle of friends and you Democrats who wouldn't see trouble coming if it hit you in the face.
And by the way, he's got two weeks to provide his birth certificate to a Pennsylvania judge - what's he gonna do? He doesn't have one - except the one that says he was born in Kenya.
