Calling All Antibodies

As President Obama reminds us, our body politic is infected with a serious contagion. Symptoms of the pandemic include:

  • Constriction of nerve pathways in the frontal lobe
  • Frothing at the mouth
  • Narcissism
  • Verbal diarrhea
  • Excruciating, non-localized distress
  • Weak, halting production of liquidity
  • Hallucinatory investing
  • Loss of self-esteem
  • Damaged relationships
  • Aggressive behavior toward others
  • War
  • Potential for economic and social collapse

The infectious agent has been traced to a virulent form of apathy, one that has acquired the potential for hereditary transmission among hosts. It is life-threatening, chronic and fatal to democracies and their citizens. If not eradicated, the prognosis is a 60% chance for anarchy, aggressive competition for increasingly scarce resources, spreading regional conflicts and, eventually, global catastrophe.

But wait. Hope abides as long as we have breath in our bodies. The proof is in this video, which admittedly starts a little slow and lame, but finishes stronger than you can imagine:

The cure is in us. It is us.

We are the antibodies of humanity. Long dormant, we are called into service at this critical moment. We have much work to do:

  • Visiting the sick, the incarcerated and the aged
  • Connecting the poor with affordable housing
  • Creating Neighborhood Watch programs
  • Helping at food pantries
  • Planting victory gardens in the backyard or in municipal spaces
  • Disposing of reusable goods through Goodwill Industries or similar charities
  • Mentoring a youth
  • Coaching after-school sports
  • Volunteering at a hospital, clinic or day-care facility

The list goes on, but only with your help. Your assignment here is to add to my list and reinforce it with links to the appropriate organizations.

Are you up to the price of citizenship? Are you willing to be an antibody for change? Are you ready to respond to the "fierce urgency of now" with more than words? Are you ready to literally make history?

Calling all antibodies. ...

And the link for Neighborhood watch:

Ripper, it is wonderful to have you back!

Thanks, Stilli. Good to be back. You probably won't see me here too often, but I don't plan to speak unless I have something to say. Great to see your thoughts here.

I am the Democratic candidate for Downers Grove Township supervisor. If I win the 4/7 election I will be in charge of not only mosquito abatement and say no to drug programs for parts of 8 towns but also administering most of the charity activities in the area. I'm up for it, I have to be.

Good for you Mark, good for you. Participatory Democracy. I see it as the real big D in Democracy.

Same message to Stilli.

Oh and Ripper, I rec'd. Good, Good Post.

Thanks Dick. Don't be surprised if I start begging for campaign donations on TPM soon. We have 128 precincts in this township and even if we try to hit all the doors we need to on foot we still need literature printed etc.

Hey Mark, small world! So will I be a constituent of yours in Westmont? (So I know who to complain to, LOL)

But seriously, you can email my TPM screename at hotmail dot com if you need help with your campaign.

user-pic

Thanks mageduley! As with any campaign we need all the help we can get. And yes Westmont is part of DG Township. It goes all the way way east to County Line Rd. I'll put you on the list and will be in touch.

Thanks, dd. I don't remember you from before, so you might be fairly new at TPM. Anyway, I'm enjoying your posts and comments.

I'm always surprised at the plentiful supply of brain power at TPM (even allowing for spric).

If you are just "lurking" Ripper, I guarantee you will love reading dd (whom I lovingly refer to as Arthur!) he's relatively new (since you left) but has been a GREAT addition here at TPM. If you aren't coming by very often, be sure to check his blog when you do. He's a prolific poster, so it may be hard to keep up, but I really think you will enjoy his work!

Okay, Arthur...now where's my 5 bucks?

user-pic

Good for you, Mark. Go, man, go! Drive to the hoop!

user-pic

Thanks Rip, I'm going up against a guy named Frank Wurster who is being bumped up from trustee 2-1/2 months early so he can run as an incumbent. I believe his name translated from German literally means "hot dog, hot dog".

Here's an all-purpose kind of organization that can match volunteers with specific organizations:

Get a job if you don't have one, live frugally so you won't have to bum off anyone, stay out of jail, mind your own business.

user-pic

Sage advice. Sage, however, is a spice. Where's the beef?

user-pic

If you'd be so kind tvarish spric tell us where your farm is so we can collectivize it first.
