I'm taking the 5th
Not the 5th Amendment. The 5th of November. I'm taking it as a vacation day, because even if I don't know the outcome of the election, I know for sure that I will be utterly useless that day. I know for a fact that I will have been up all night on the 4th.
With luck, I will have been up all night calling all my friends, drinking champagne with my husband, and dancing in the streets.
There is also the possibility—remote, but still a possibility—that I will have been up all night worrying about the future of the nation and the world, weeping inconsolably, checking my score on the move to Canada test, and just generally despairing.
Either way, I will be good for less than nothing the next day. So I'm taking the day off.

I hear you. I'm almost good for nothing already with the stress.

Me too--I'm just trying not to admit it.

It's like watching a Hitchcock movie you've seen before. Somehow, knowing how its going to end doesn't make it less suspenseful.

Does anyone know if A) a person can continue to receive social security if they emigrate, and B) does Canada accept retiree immigrants?

A) SSA.gov's info on collecting benefits while residing outside the US
B) No, the retiree category for Canadian immigrants was discontinued in 1991. One available option is to apply for an Investor Retirement Visa (I believe that's the name, anyway) -- but it requires substantial assets onhand ($80k?) and you would not qualify for social services. I also think those visas are temporary for a matter of years, but once you've exhausted its term you can usually qualify for a separate type of visa. Of course, as a retiree, you may unfortunately not qualify for the second visa and be forced to return to the US.

Addendum to say Mexico is always an option, if you've got some savings. There are a number of expat retiree communities too.

Molly, trust me. You'll be taking the 5th off, like me, to nurse a happy hangover.
Promise.

I took the 4th and 5th as PTO as soon as I could in the new job.
I had thought I would be an election judge but the job has been such chaos, the 14 hour day is beyond me. I'll do some calling or driving and such. Then go watch the results and imbibe something really good.
Hint on keeping the hangover to a minimum. Drink plenty of fluid that has no alcohol. Most of the hangover symptoms are due to dehydration. A few Tyelenol type tabs, some pepto may help too.

No no no! Do NOT mix Tylenol and alcohol, that's just asking for liver damage!
Stick to lots and lots of water. Maybe some aspirin taken with food to limit stomach irritation.
I suspect that sheer joy will overwhelm any bodily aches 'n' pains.
:D

Second that!
Stay away from acetaminophen(or paracetamol) - if you must take something, go for low-dose aspirin or ibuprofen.
Water, a sport drink, or my personal preference, EmergencE(good dose of C and B vitamins) are the way to go. Your liver will thank you. Your kidneys and bladder may complain a bit if you're not diligent about throughput control, though.
Bonus - drink enough H2O, and you'll have plenty of opportunities for "I'm so excited I have to pee" jokes.

Three more reasons to take off the 5th (in no particular order):
- It's Guy Fawkes Day
- It's Wednesday
- It's ☠enghis's birthday
