<![CDATA[Well we think we've found the next Incumbent, Mike Rogers, whose scare tactics should cause us all to be fearful. And we haven't had to look that far. <br /><br />Rogers released attack ads on Friday equating opponent <a href="http://www.segall2008.com/">Joshua Segall</a> as being a liberal because of his father's client and being named to the DCCC Red to Blue list. And he's the one accusing Segall of running a negative campaign. He's going on a Bachman like witch-hunt and he needs to be stopped. <br /><br />This has just gone too far. We need your help in Alabama where we can win this race. <br /><br />The script of the Ad you can find on&nbsp; <a href="http://www.mikerogersforcongress.com/">Rogers website </a>. As soon as it comes up on YouTube we will embed the ad. <br /><br />&lt;blockquote&gt;What's behind Joshua Segall's negative campaign? A liberal.<br /><br />Segall is supported by leaders of the ACLU, a group that wants to register convicted felons to vote and opposes terrorist surveillance. Segall would keep liberal Nancy Pelosi in power. Joshua Segall is for higher taxes of small businesses. A real jobs killer that would make the economy even worse. Joshua Segall: His liberal values are too extreme. &lt;/blockquote&gt;<br /><br />The leaders of the ACLU that Rogers refers to : Former Alabama State Bar President Bobby Segall who is also an ACLU attorney. Bobby Segall is so respected that he was elected by the members of the Alabama State Bar - Republicans and Democrats alike to the President position. <br /><br />Here is Bobby Segall's bio from the&nbsp; <a href="http://www.aclualabama.org/AboutUs/Board.htm">ACLU of Alabama's website</a> <br /><br />&lt;blockquote&gt;BOBBY SEGALL has been practicing law in Alabama since 1973 and has served on the ACLU Board since 2003. He is currently with the firm of Copeland, Franco, Screws and Gill in Montgomery, practicing in civil litigation, personal injury, corporate litigation and First Amendment law. Bobby has served as President of the Board of Legal Services Corporation of Alabama, the Montgomery County Bar Association and the Montgomery County Trial Lawyers Association. He has also been a member of the Alabama Board of Bar Commissioners. Bobby was the president of the Alabama Bar Association in 2005 and 2006. He has represented clients in numerous ACLU of Alabama sponsored lawsuits, including a case seeking reform of the state's education system and various First Amendment cases. He represented the ACLU in James v. ACLU, otherwise known as the second Ten Commandments case. He is a member of the Legal Committee and the Chair of the Nominations Committee &lt;/blockquote&gt;<br /><br />Bobby Segall, from my personal knowledge is a good, honorable, well-liked man and was President of the Alabama Bar Association of which Mike Rogers is a member. Mike Rogers was a plaintiffs lawyer before he entered Congress and now he is a corporate stooge who takes thousands and thousands of dollars from Big Business, Pharmaceutical Companies and Oil Companies. <br /><br />&lt;b&gt;So Bobby Segall represented ex-felons in a voting rights case.&lt;/b&gt; And this Felon Voting Rights issue is a valid dispute over some confusion over which ex-felons should be allowed to register to vote. A number of ex-felons who have not lost the right to vote have been wrongfully scrubbed from the rolls. There has been confusion on this issue in Alabama for a while. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.clantonadvertiser.com/news/2008/oct/10/felon-voting-suit-aclu-dismissed/">Here is an overview </a>&lt;/a&gt;<br /><br />&lt;blockquote&gt;At issue is a law passed by the Legislature in 2003 that says felons who committed crimes of moral turpitude can't vote, but those who committed other crimes can. The problem is the Legislature did not create a definitive list of what crimes fall in each group.<br /><br />The governor's office came up with a list of more than 400 crimes of moral turpitude that was used until last month to reject ex-felons' registration applications and remove those already on the voter rolls.<br /><br />The state attorney general and the state Administrative Office of Courts each developed their own lists that are much shorter than the governor's.&lt;/blockquote&gt;<br /><br /><br />Mike Rogers calls out Josh Segall for his ties to his father and says Segall is running the negative campaign. All I've seen is Segall telling the truth about Rogers being one of the most ineffective members of Congress, casting a deciding vote on CAFTA and failing to help build infrastructure in his district.<br /><br />Josh Segall, as a young attorney, is impressive in his own right. He graduated from Brown University which he has been criticized for. Although he is a 4th Generation Alabamian and graduated from the University of Alabama Law School where he started Homegrown Alabama ( an agriculture program). Segall worked a number of national campaigns and speaks knowledgeable about any issue that affects residents of the 3rd Congressional District. <br /><br />Oh yeah and in&nbsp; <a href="http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20081019/NEWS01/810190321">today's Montgomery Advertiser</a> &lt;/a&gt; the candidates answers to a series of health care questions were published. <br /><br />Mike Rogers mostly gave his typical one or two sentence answers including addressing universal health care by saying<br /><br />&lt;blockquote&gt;Free-market reforms are the best answer.<br /><br />We need to do new and creative things like authorizing the associated health plans and to do things to strengthen Medicare and Medicaid, which are just absolutely essential to our health-care system.&lt;/blockquote&gt;<br /><br />What things are those Mike? Can you even tell us?<br /><br />Of course Segall gave very thoughtful and provoking answers. He talked about the quality and cost of health care at length. <br /><br />Rogers clearly is a very dim-bulb that gives the standard Republican crafted answers. <br /><br />Segall on the other hand understands how prescription drug companies can cut the costs in an number of ways including lowering advertising costs. <br /><br />Mike Rogers has no real answer for stopping the spread of HIV and AIDS through increased federal funding.Rogers never speaks about preventive care.<br /><br />Now come on Mike, you've been in Congress for six years and you cannot come up with any more than this. <br /><br />Josh Segall, although he doesn't have the political rap sheet that Rogers does, has plenty of innovative answers and ideas on how to fix health care in this country<br /><br />&lt;blockquote&gt;They can negotiate for lower prices, and they can tell these prescription drug companies to stop all the advertising and put money into lowering drug prices and into more research and development.<br /><br />In this country right now, we do most of the research and development at our universities, and then we give the drugs to these pharmaceutical companies so that they can market them at exorbitant prices.<br /><br />One, we need to stop sending people to the emergency room and we need to practice preventative care. That means you send them to the doctor, you incentivize going to the doctor instead of going to the emergency room. That's No. 1.<br /><br />No. 2, is we've got too much paperwork. We've got more paperwork in this country than any other country in world. And we don't have best health care in the world.<br /><br />And No. 3 is you've got to deal with harm that happens to people in the hospital. This is as unreported an issue as there is in this country. And I believe that a congressman ought to have some expertise on this issue.<br /><br />We still have people in this country die everyday. We've had over 100,000 die every year in this country -- die -- because of a preventable harm that happens in the hospital. Bedsores, pneumonia, staph infection, getting the wrong medication -- there are a host of other infections people get -- those things are mostly preventable.<br /><br />And we one, don't talk about those things. We should talk about them. We should know about them. You should know how your hospital performs on those things.<br /><br />By the way, Alabama is little better than some other states, but not good enough. Blue Cross Blue Shield has done good in pushing Alabama hospitals to be better on this.<br /><br />Second thing, and it's been a huge thing by the way that Medicare and Medicaid have said they're not going to reimburse for infections that people get in the hospital. That's a huge deal. It's a great deal. The other thing is we've got to have more primary care doctors and we've got to have more nurses.<br /><br />Nursing is a tough profession. Hospitals are understaffed. Nurses are overwhelmed. They have a huge amount of work, and long shifts. They're not paid enough for that kind of a job. We have more nurses retiring and not coming back at an early age than in most other professions there are. We need to bring nursing back.<br />&lt;/blockquote&gt;<br /><br /><br />I'm asking you to take a look at this race and help us support Joshua Segall. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.actblue.com/page/twofortuesdays">Click here</a> and help us Support Josh <br /><br /><br /><br /> ]]>

<![CDATA[We think John McCain showed poor judgment in his decision to select Dan Quayle, I mean Sarah Palin as his running buddy. We decided to have a little fun with it and hopefully raise a little money for our home team of Obama-Biden.<br /><br />Here without a drum roll are the Fifteen Reasons We Support Sarah Palin (if you like please donate to Obama-Biden on<a href="http://www.actblue.com/page/twofortuesdays"> our page</a>)<br /><br />15. She left her town of Wasilla in a <a href="http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/8/29/1223/87119/35/578632">great fiscal situation according to her set of books</a><br /><br />14. She knows how to<a href="http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/8/29/21034/4861/159/579549"> edit on Wiki</a>. I'm sure she can teach McCain to google.<br /><br />13. She thinks Alaska's proximity to Russia gives her insight into foreign policy.
<br /><br />12&nbsp; She rides a mean snowmobile and cooks a fantastic mooseburger<br /><br />11.At least she wasn't President of the Harvard Law Review<br /><br />10. Palin <a href="http://www.progressiveelectorate.com/showDiary.do;jsessionid=5445C64E6E3F2F1213E0552447B37F0C?diaryId=308">knows the duties of the Vice-President</a>. In fact someone explained them to her today. <br /><br />9.&nbsp; Mike Wooten will get his job as Alaska Trooper back<br /><br />8&nbsp; She's Vogue.<br /><br />7 Palin said she will debate Al Gore anytime and anyplace on Global Warming because it's always cold in Alaska for the Idiatrod<br /><br />6&nbsp;&nbsp; She believes in Absolute Power because she thought it was a great Clint Eastwood movie.
<br /><br />5.&nbsp; She has five kids.<br /><br />4With her experience she can enter and win the Sturgis Beauty pageant.<br /><br />3 We would get her husband Todd as a <a href="http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/8/29/155145/681/530/579154">shadow Vice President<br /></a><br />2.&nbsp; She was properly vetted. <br /><br />1 Before being Governor she was the mayor of an Alaskan village called Wasilla which had about 5,000 residents. That's experience]]>

<![CDATA[<p>My wife is at the convention and I'm at home. . She was a big Hillary supporter and I was a big Barack supporter. We had many interesting debates and arguments, but we both made a deal that if Hillary won I would go to the convention and support her and if Barack won that she would go to the convention and support him.<br /><br />So to ease my pain of not being there, I am doing a fundraiser. I've already raised $120 including my own $50. Go to My <a href="http://www.actblue.com/page/twofortuesdays">Act Blue Page</a> and give us another $10, $20 or whatever you can afford.<br /><br />My fifty reasons.<br /><br />1. I am a lifelong Democrat</p>
<p>2. My best friend from law school just had his second child - second baby girl this morning. He's also a big Barack supporter.<br />&nbsp;<br />3. I saw Barack speak three times this election cycle:</p>
<p>4. I marched with Barack and the Clinton's across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma in 2007.</p>
<p>5. Beau Biden gave an emotional heartfelt speech last night that brought his father, Michelle Obama and myself and millions of others to tears.</p>
<p>6. John Kerry gave the best speech of his life last night including my favorite line - "Before McCain can debate Obama he needs to finish the debate with himself."</p>
<p>7. My Congressman Artur Davis from Alabama gave a phenomenal nominating speech yesterday. </p>
<p>8. Gov Sebilius gave us this gem - I'm sure you remember a girl from Kansas who said there's no place like home. Well, in John McCain's version, there's no place like home. And a home. And home. And home.</p>
<p><br />9. My mother in law cried yesterday when Barack won the nomination</p>
<p>10. Brian Schweitzer is great</p>
<p>11. I just read Kos's endorsement of electronic filing for the Senate FEC reports</p>
<p>12. I only own two houses. Well the bank really owns both of them.</p>
<p>13. Chris Van Hollen gave a good speech yesterday that nobody saw.</p>
<p>14. One of our Two For Tuesday Candidates took the Stage with Van Hollen - Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico 3</p>
<p>15. Another one of our Two for Tuesday Candidates took the stage yesterday - Jeff Merkley of Oregon</p>
<p>16. Hillary Clinton ended the roll call yesterday in support of Obama</p>
<p>17. Republicans like Jim Leach and some other guy I saw from Iowa support Obama</p>
<p>18. "No way, no how, no McCain!!!"</p>
<p>19. That's not Change, that's more of the same.</p>
<p>20. Did I say that I like Joe Biden</p>
<p>21. Bill Richardson gave a great speech tonight.</p>
<p>22. I get to rub it in my wife's face that I was right and she is wrong. </p>
<p>23. I'm proud of my wife for being at the convention today</p>
<p>24. Because Left in Alabama &lt;a href="<a>Left'>http://www.leftinalabama.com"&gt;Left</a> in Alabama&lt;/a&gt; has provide great coverage throughout.</p>
<p>25. Because CSPAN has been great.</p>
<p>26. Al Gore gave a solid speech. Loved the recycling line. </p>
<p>27. Because i only have to come up with 23 more reasons</p>
<p>28. That's not Change we can Believe in</p>
<p>29. Fire it up</p>
<p>30. I'm a big Dick Durbin fan. We met at the DuQuoin State Fair and he remember me two weeks later in Chicago and then four months later in the halls of Congress.</p>
<p>31. Dick Durbin still doesn't know I was the one that wrecked his campaign truck (it really wasn't that bad, but just wanted it to sound dramatic)</p>
<p>32. AlObama voted for Barack on super tuesday.</p>
<p>33. I have a picture of me with Hillary when i was 17 at a conference in DC. that I kept up the entire primary season</p>
<p>34. I endorsed Barack for President in 2008 4 years ago</p>
<p>35. Because John McCain was a POW - had to be in here somewhere right?</p>
<p>36. John McCain is not a maverick - he's a sidekick says Sen. Bob Casey</p>
<p>37. McCain will announce his awful VP choice sometime in the next 48 hours</p>
<p>38. Al Gore will give a great speech tonight</p>
<p>39. Ted Kennedy - enough said</p>
<p>40. We can't have 12 more years of Bush economics</p>
<p>41. McCain doesn't understand the economy by his own admission</p>
<p>42. Only 8 more to go and after 8 we are rid of W.</p>
<p>43. John Conyers said he will hold Rove in contempt</p>
<p>44. Michelle Obama gave a great speech</p>
<p>45. 45 years ago Martin Luther King had a dream on this very same day.</p>
<p>46. 4 more to go and only 4 more months of Bush</p>
<p>47. 3 more to go - 3 states to tour this weekend or Obama-Biden - Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Ohio</p>
<p>48. 75,000 plus at Invesco field tonight</p>
<p>49&nbsp; Obama- Biden supported the GI Bill</p>
<p>50 Change is something I can Believe in !!!<br /><br /></p>]]>

We <a href="http://www.progressiveelectorate.com">blogged </a>on this earlier in the week, but after some more vetting on our part we realized that we left some info out.<br /><br />So here it goes<br /><br />Apparently, the maverick of the Senate, or the Sidekick of the President as Senator Bob Casey called him last night is ready to make his VP pick on Friday.<br /><br />Well what the heck has taken so long. <br /><br />Here are the contenders and why they may have been problematic to figure out:<br /><br />Tim Pawlenty : McCain had to "google" to find out what state this guy was from.<br /><br />Bobby Jindal: McCain asked the IOC, after seeing they did such a good job with the Chinese gymnasts, to check Jindal's birth certificate to see if he was old enough.<br /><br />Tom Ridge: McCain had to figure out if that would affect the terror code scam on the public. He also had to find someone else to figure out what the colors meant.<br /><br />Joe Lieberman : McCain had to figure out if Lieberman's kiss with Bush meant more than McCain's warm embrace with W. He seemingly got a little jealous<br /><br />Two new candidates have emerged:<br /><br />Kay Bailey Hutchinson : Well apparently these two do not get along. Wouldn't be the first time McCain made an arrangement with someone he called a four letter word.<br /><br />Mitt Romney: Wouldn't call this new, but questions remains as to if he could make his Hillary Clinton the pick?<br /><br />]]>

<![CDATA[Perhaps the best line of the convention thus far. And not too many people heard it unless you were watching CSPAN or in the Convention Hall. Of course CNN will call it a lackluster night.

Another speech not covered in primetime, but should have been. At least this gem from Sebelius will get some play (if from nobody else but the Progressive Electorate)

<blockquote>Barack Obama has a plan to save the dream of homeownership for families who've lost their homes or fear they can never afford one — unlike John McCain, who has so many he can't keep track of them all.

I'm sure you remember a girl from Kansas who said there's no place like home. Well, in John McCain's version, there's no place like home. And a home. And home. And home.</blockquote>

Gotta love a joke referencing the Wizard of Oz and bashing McCain. Solid. ]]>

<![CDATA[<p>Hell no. Just kidding. The real title for this article is <strong>Saxby the Sugar Stooge.</strong> One of the biggest corporate stooges in the Senate, Saxby took corporate loyalty to a new level <a href="http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/business/5920036.html">at a Senate hearing on Friday</a>. <br /><br />Based on his demeanor at a Senate hearing on Friday you would think Saxby owned Imperial Sugar Company.Well maybe Imperial Sugar owns him. <br /><br />Saxby is arguing that a "whistleblower" is responsible for a February explosion that killed 13 people at the Imperial Sugar company plant in Port Wentworth, Georgia. Keep in mind that Graham. H. Graham (the man&nbsp;being questioned)&nbsp;had only worked at the plant for three months, while others allege years of safety violations.<br /><br />Let's follow the quotes and then follow the money and even Saxby's son ,the&nbsp;corporate lobbyist, and his connections:<br /><br />The Article in the Houston Chronicle says<br /><br />"Chambliss also said he has not been influenced by any lobbyists for the Sugar Land, Texas-based company or by his son, Bo. The younger Chambliss is an in-house Washington lobbyist for the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, which also is represented by an outside firm that lobbies for Imperial Sugar.<br />"My purpose has been to try to get the facts out," Chambliss said. "This guy (Graham) is an agent of the company. How anybody can interpret that I'm doing something for the benefit of the company when really I'm chastising their agent is beyond me ... The company's got to stand on their own. I'm not about to defend them in any way."<br /><br /><strong>However that is countered by Graham and his attorneys as well as the other Georgia Senator Johnny Isakson.</strong></p>
<p>"Hilder and others have accused Chambliss of doing the company's bidding on Tuesday when he sharply questioned Graham at a Senate hearing. Chambliss' questions raised eyebrows because no one aside from Imperial had publicly doubted Graham's claims. That includes Chambliss' fellow Georgia Republican, Johnny Isakson. The two rarely split, but Isakson says he has full faith in Graham's account."<br /><br /><strong>Let's follow the money for a second</strong></p>
<p>This might show a little inisght as to why the questions of bias arise. <br /><br />1. Look at <a href="http://www.opensecrets.org/pacs/expend.php?cmte=C00424473&amp;Cycle=2008">Imperial Sugar's PAC</a><br /><br />$1,000 to Saxby Chambliss this cycle- $2,000 of which was contributed by John Sheptor<br /><br />John Sheptor is President and CEO of Imperial Sugar who is <a href="http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/officerProfile?symbol=IPSU.O&amp;officerId=926168">compensated quite handsomely</a>. <br /><br />2. There are several others with ties to Imperial Sugar that have contributed to the PAC</p>
<p>Harold Mechler - CFO is a $500 Contributor to the PAC<br />&nbsp;&nbsp; <br />&nbsp;&nbsp; Gaylord Coan - $1,000 contributor to the PAC is a director</p>
<p>(Apparently Savannah Congressman John Barrow returned some of the money he was given by Imperial and he's not even questioning them at a Senate hearing)<br /><br />3.&nbsp; Saxby Chambliss has received $21k from the Sugar&nbsp; industry this cycle.<br /><br />4.&nbsp; Saxby Chambliss has a son Bo Chambliss who works for the Chicago Mercantile Exchange as a registered lobbyist (the quote is correct there)<br /><br />Clarence "Bo" Saxby Chambliss has given $2,000 to the Chicago Mercantile PAC.<br /><br />The Chicago Mercantile lobbyist works on behalf of several companies with ties to the <a href="http://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/issuesum.php?lname=Agriculture&amp;year=2008">Sugar Industry</a>. <br /><br />Googling lobbying and CME, we found <a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/chi-0507160008jul16%2C1%2C6948815.story?coll=chi-business-hed">one article</a> that shows that </p>
<p>The Chicago Mercantile Exchange is employing the son of Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) to lobby members of his father's congressional committee and other lawmakers on legislation that may increase trading at the exchange. Clarence Saxby "Bo" Chambliss Jr. is one of two staff lobbyists at the Merc charged with "providing information on issues that impact our industry to decision-makers in Washington," Merc spokesman David Prosperi said Friday.&nbsp; Saxby Chambliss heads the Senate Agriculture Committee, which jointly oversees the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and must this year pass legislation reauthorizing the futures regulator through 2011. The CFTC's current authority expires Sept. 30. The panel may vote as early as this month on a bill to reauthorize the CFTC, said a committee spokesman.<br /><br />Now there isn't much recusing Bo Chambliss can do with one other lobbyist unless that lobbyist is doing the heavy lifting while Bo is giving mulligans to Judge Smails</p>
<p>5. Probably not much of a stretch to say that Saxby has some questions to answer about his claim that he is not biased. We will keep searching to see if we can find more connections between Saxby and Imperial Sugar. Or we will let you know if Saxby follows suit of John Barrow and returns the PAC contributions. <br /><br /><strong>Conclusion</strong>: Saxby Chambliss needs to go home or get a job at some Sugar Refinery (Remember what he did to Max Cleeland) - <br /><br />Georgia has a primary runoff for the Dem nomination to take on Saxby this fall. Jim Martin is the better candidate and will help all Dems in Georgia on the ballot including Obama. (Vernon Jones the other candidate involved in the primary is absolute mess)<br /><br /><a href="http://www.actblue.com/page/twofortuesdays">Donate to Jim Martin $10.01</a> or more if you can right now. <br /><br /><br /></p>]]>

<![CDATA[I could, but I won't. <a href="http://blog.al.com/spotnews/2008/07/cheney_will_be_star_attraction.html">Cheney is coming to my town</a> this afternoon to raise money for the Alabama Republican Congressional Delegation. .In fact, he has probably already wasted a bunch of taxpayer money by clogging up the interstates and other highways with his envoy. <br /><br />To counter this behavior we have set up a <a href="http://www.actblue.com/page/chasecheney">Chase Cheney for Change page</a> to support Alabama Democrats and especially AL-03 challenger Josh Segall. <br /><br />We have only raised $235 and I feel we should be doing much better. Please chip in $5 or whatever you can afford. <br /><br />1. This is about a number of Democrats that say Cheney coming anywhere to fundraise is ridiculous. Strength is in number of donors not the amount. The republicans are going to have 100 people at no less than $250-500 a pop. That event is not open to the public and is at a very exclusive and historically racist Country Club.<br /><br />2.<a href="http://archive.southcoasttoday.com/daily/08-00/08-03-00/b05sp099.htm"> Shoal Creek</a>&nbsp;=&nbsp; From the article Shoal Creek founder Hall Thompson was quoted in the Birmingham Post-Herald in June 1990 as saying his club would not be pressured into accepting blacks as members. <br />"The country club is our home, and we pick and choose who we want ... ," Hall said at the time. "We have the right to associate or not associate with whomever we choose."<br /><br />*Are they making a statement by having the event here?&nbsp; Am I reading into this? Am I not making enough out of this?<br /><br />3. Read <a href="http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/7/30/2093/99969">Mooncat's diary</a> for more on this race and Segall. You will be impressed. <br /><br />4. While the Republicans are bringing in a Washington insider, Mike Rogers campaign manager is saying<br /><br />"While Mike Rogers is campaigning on constructive, common sense solutions, Josh Segall is running a failing, negative campaign that voters aren't taking seriously," said Rogers' campaign manager Tripp Skipper. "Segall can make all of the false claims he wants about Mike Rogers' record, but nothing he says will cover for his northern Ivy League roots or extreme liberal friends bankrolling his uninspiring campaign."<br /><br />5. Let's show Mike Rogers and Tripper Skipper that we are going to <a href="http://www.actblue.com/page/chasecheney">Chase Cheney out of Alabama</a> and that he is not popular anywhere. ]]>

<![CDATA[<strong>Background<br /></strong><br />In 2005, Alabama Congressman Mike Rogers (AL-03) cast the deciding vote on CAFTA as he changed his mind at the last minute after consulting a CEO of a company that was a large employer in his district.<strong>(also a large donor to his campaigns).</strong>&nbsp; That company closed its doors and 1,000 people were left unemployed.
<p>Unfortunately, thousands of sock and apparel jobs left the districts of many of&nbsp;those that voted for CAFTA. Many of those also decided to change their vote at the midnight hour.
<p>This vote is not lost on Josh Segall, a 29 year old attorney and first time&nbsp;challenger,&nbsp;who is challenging Rogers this fall. In fact this could be one of the deciding factors for voters in this district.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br /><br /><strong>Enter Josh Segall</strong></p>
<p>In an Interview with the <a href="http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/cgi-bin/mt-current/plugins/Profile/www.huffingtonpost.com/nathaniel-bach/the-new-south-and-obama-a_b_114167.html">Huffington Post</a>&nbsp;yesterday, Josh Segall said when asked about the economy in his district</p>
<blockquote>
<p>"The particular vote that matters a lot is CAFTA (the Central American Free Trade Agreement). We can point to particular businesses that moved to Central or South America. They did it in the last three years and Rogers first said that he was opposed to CAFTA and then said he was going to be for it if a particular mill in Alabama told him it wouldn't hurt their business. And that mill is now closed and CAFTA passed by just two votes. So essentially Mike Rogers was the deciding vote for CAFTA"<br /><br />An article in the <a href="http://www.annistonstar.com/showcase/2006/as-2006apme-0730-blyman-7d10n2359.htm">Anniston Star</a>, one of the larger newspapers in the District, covered this story in 2006 and said "Third Congressional District Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Saks, blames the decline in Alabama manufacturing jobs on free-trade agreements such as NAFTA, and on foreign competition. Rogers voted for the Central American Free Trade Agreement last year. He said he did so only after rewriting the bill to protect textiles, and after Avondale Mills assured him that CAFTA would not hurt its business"<br /><br />Avondale Mills was the company that Segall refers to that closed in 2006 and as stated earlier over 1,000 people in the 3rd Congressional District lost their jobs.&nbsp;<br /><br />Segall points to some statistics saying that Alabama has lost 15,000 jobs in the past five years. Many of those can be attributed to such legislation as CAFTA.<br /><br />Rogers may have consulted the CEO Steve Felker, but that should be taken with a grain of salt. How many of the employees did he talk to about this? How many labor groups did he consult about this?<br /><br />Read,&nbsp;from <a href="http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/cgi-bin/mt-current/plugins/Profile/www.dailyhome.com/news/2006/dh-localnews-0524-cnorwood-6e24m0244.htm">The Talladega&nbsp;Daily Home</a>, &nbsp;what Rogers said after the closing "It was just sad,” U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers said Tuesday. “It’s like a death in the family. I heard about it when I got off the plane yesterday and immediately called Mark Tapley (manager of the Sylacauga plant) to extend my condolences. Just as I’ve been a partner with them all along when they were trying to survive, I want to be a part of them when they transition."<br /><br /><strong>Yeah it's a death in the family that you caused Rogers. It's like&nbsp;making a change to&nbsp;your brother's will and not telling his kids that they won't be left anything.</strong>&nbsp;And did you talk to any of the workers or just your buddy Felker who gave you <em>$4,000 worth of campaign contributions between 2004 and 2007?&nbsp;</em>&nbsp;<a href="http://www.newsmeat.com/fec/bystate_detail.php?city=MONROE&amp;st=GA&amp;last=Felker">See reports of contributions.</a><br /><br /><strong>Conclusion<br /><br /></strong>Mike Rogers can say he is for raising the minimum wage in campaign videos, but we have proof that he hurt the workers in his district. Mike Rogers doesn't listen to workers. Mike Rogers listens to Corporate CEO's.<br /><br />Please take action and help Josh Segall, who will work hard to bring jobs back to his district and save jobs from being cut. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.actblue.com/page/chasecheney">Donate $25.01 to Josh Segall</a> and you will not be disappointed. This is a race that matters. Rogers is one of the most ineffective members of Congress. </p></blockquote>

<![CDATA[<p>Yesterday Georgia had primary elections. The usual suspects (i.e. the incumbents) all won in the Congressional Races.<br /><br />The Georgia Senate Primary is going into a runoff between Dekalb Ceo Vernon Jones and former State-Representative and Vietnam Veteran Jim Martin.<br /><br />Jones was the one that invoked Barack in a campaign mailer without his consent. Jones is very talented but also has numerous character flaws and baggage . He has had problems with his employees and has been criticized for being proud of voting for Bush in 2000 and 2004.<br /><br />Jim Martin is the more credible candidate to take on Saxby Chambliss. <a href="http://www.progressiveelectorate.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=105">read more</a><br /><br />Putting Vernon Jones on the ballot as the Dem nominee would be a mistake. <a href="http://www.actblue.com/page/twofortuesdays">Click here</a> to help Jim Martin</p>]]>

<![CDATA[It seems that Obama's coattails were working in the Georgia Primary today. Obama endorsed John Barrow who while many felt may be a bit vulnerable is crushing his opponent. Hopefully this will make Barrow work harder for the ticket in the fall as well as represent his district better.<br /><br />Also, Vernon Jones, a controversial African American Dekalb County CEO, appears headed for a runoff with Jim Martin. Many predicted that Jones may not make the runoff. Apparently his controversial cropped photo with Obama may have helped. <a href="http://www.progressiveelectorate.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=59">Obama's camp was not particularly happy about the photo.</a> <br /><br />I think tonights results certainly show Obama's strengths. <br />Not sure what will happen in a runoff between Jones and Martin, but do not count Jones out. Either are a long shot against Saxby Chambless in the fall.<br /><br />]]>
