Guns on Campus
So basically the Texas legislature thinks students should be carrying concealed weapons on campus as a "deterrent" to violent crimes. The logic beffudles me but this is really being considered.

What does everyone else think? Am I missing something? And shouldn't this be a big story?

1. Many think this is a good idea.
2. No, you're not missing anything. 48 states have some provision for concealed carry; it's just *where* that's the issue. Presumably the fear of instant death is a significant deterrent.
3. Big story? Maybe. It's only a biggie if my state legislature prohibits me from defending myself.
In Texas, a concealed handgun permit holder may carry his weapon in the governor's office, the state capitol, churches, most places that serve alcohol, hospitals, amusement parks, city parks, libraries, and elsewhere. Expanding that list to include schools (elementary through college) is only reasonable.
There should be a provision, in my view, for private colleges or schools to prohibit concealed carry if they desire - but public institutions? Of course not.
If the lege does permit school carry, the list of prohibited places shrinks to a reasonable level (jails, courtrooms, government meetings, and polling places).

Some may not think it's such a good idea, when gunfights start breaking out between jilted boyfriends and their replacements in the heat of the moment. Then again, it's Texas, so maybe they'll just figure it's the price you pay for the right to bear arms. My guess is the bill won't pass, but again... it is Texas.
