Peggy Noonan hits Palin again

After her initial open-mic slip-up, I was afraid Noonan would revert to the party line. And for a while, I think she did. But now she's back and being refreshingly honest:

We have seen Mrs. Palin on the national stage for seven weeks now, and there is little sign that she has the tools, the equipment, the knowledge or the philosophical grounding one hopes for, and expects, in a holder of high office. .

In the end the Palin candidacy is a symptom and expression of a new vulgarization in American politics. It's no good, not for conservatism and not for the country. And yes, it is a mark against John McCain, against his judgment and idealism.

Familiarity breeds contempt.

And children.

Thanks for the link. There is something very pleasurable about watching the right cannibalize itself.

user-pic

Thanks plebnista. I've been collecting quotes about Palin from conservatives recently as ammunition against some right-wing relatives.

This will fit in quite nicely!

user-pic

I'm fascinated by this whole conversation going on among Conservatives. I think that I just really want to see Neocons get their assed kicked.

Hey C4, you got your old pic back.

user-pic

I just wish she'd use at least a tennis racket, if not a Louisville Slugger...

user-pic

Clearly, Peggy Noonan is a sexist -- because she went after Hillary Clinton as well.

By the way, when Hillary was being trounced in the media back when, we heard many at TPM make claims of sexism. Now that Palin is being trounced, there is nary a peep of these claims. I'd say that one's political views may color your thinking -- but then I might be accused of racism.

user-pic

I'd say Hillary had competency and deserved to be in the race. Palin is getting trounced because she doesn't belong up there any more than that tax dodging plumber. She has too much dirt on her. She's really not that bright. She says offensive shit.

How is that sexist?

user-pic

How do you see Noonan's comments about Palin and Clinton as sexist? Is she saying these two women aren't worthy because they are women? I didn't like Clinton during the primaries, but she is truly intelligent, smart, tough and is genuine in her concern for the little guy. I don't think Palin is stupid, but she takes pride in being uninformed about America and the world. She promotes hate, ignorance and intolerance without blinking. Palin is lucky, however, that she is good looking. She knows it. Her campaign knows it and they have exploited it very well. I'm surprised they haven't turned her into a blonde. Her looks and her hate speeches are what keep the crowds coming and the base riled up.

user-pic

Stop repeating the nonsense that Palin is "good looking". She's mediocre, at best -- that not helped by the moose-sized mandible.

user-pic

You forgot the occasional crazy eye. It's like the thing has a mind of its own.

user-pic

She's got that whole "Married with (Somebody's) Children" vibe.

user-pic

What is beyond me is that if they can see this so clearly in Palin,

-Why werent/have they been able to see this in Bush???

user-pic

Peggy Noonan is female, and views Reagan and Bush as "dreamy" -- "real men".

user-pic

Thanks for the info! Things have been relatively quiet about Palin - Are they ignoring her, hoping she will self-destruct?

user-pic

I just read the whole thing. WOW! OUCH!

Love her ending - Come get me, Copper!

I really respect Noonan as an intellectual conservative who will speak out.

(I always respect well-read, well-spoken people. That's why Palin is so infuriating!)

user-pic

If she were truly an intellectual, she wouldn't be a conservative.

I will keep saying this until I turn blue in the face. The Dems need to go after this Mrs. pea brain. She is the final nail in the coffin for McHate. She is such an easy target. The strategy so far has been to pretty much leave here alone and let her past interview do her in. I heard Jim Webb today go after her and I thought he was dead on. Maybe this is the beginning. Right now Obama is taking a lot of hits on this Bill Ayers, Acorn crap and I am sure Rev Wright is right around the corner. This is the only area that bothers me about the Dems - our inability to create news that dominates the MSM for days. The Obama camp and the DNC need to come up with something on Monday to take the focus off Ayers and Acorn. Sara Palin and her husband association with AIP along with her recent comments on Pro AMerican Areas will do the trick. However it looks like the Media will not accurate cover these stories unless it is raised aggressively by the DNC.

user-pic

I completely agree. It's time to show pictures of McCain with Gordon Liddy together side by side with quotes of Liddys' about how to kill federal agents, and lists of other stuff he's done.

It's time to drag out the Alaska Independece Party speech that Sarah gave, documenting their goals and then follow up with her "I like pro-America people."

It shouldn't be Obama, but Biden could do it and several others too. We don't have to get dirty -- just say the truth, which is NOT what they are doing.

Also, this shit McCain alwasys spouts; that Obama will raise your taxes has to be fought constantly. And I think it would be helpful to come back with this: If you make 250,000 in a year, your taxes would go up by (I think it is $600 - could be wrong) If you make less than that your taxes will go down. If McCain is elected and your employer contributes to your health care, HE WILL TAX YOU ON THOSE BENEFITS, so HE is the one who will raise your taxes!

Someone needs to call these ass-hats out on the Osama crap too. I would love an ad that would say,

"Americans will vote in large numbers this year, and one reason is to assure that the negativity, fear-mongering and lies don't win. On November 5th, as Presdient-elect Obama and his staff get ready to repair the damage done in these last 8 years, McCain and Palin will have something equally hard to try to repair: Their reputations."

user-pic

Wow! Thanks for this!

user-pic

Did you see the comments after her article? These are well-spoken, apparently educated people who believe Palin is some sort of new conservative Messiah or something!! Ugh. Poor Peggy.

I'm hoping very much that Colin Powell does endorse Obama tomorrow ..... and makes a bit part of his reasoning his absolute (but polite) rejection of Sarah Palin as a possible CinC. Lord knows it *should* be a major factor for many people!

user-pic

That article is simply bizarre. Noonan clearly understands that Palin is not qualified, and she knows that McCain put the country at risk by selecting her, and yet she continues to attack Obama. She exemplifies the self-destructive, shoot-yourself-in-the-foot idiocy the Republicans have been demonstrating for the past eight years. She knows George W. Bush has been a disaster, but she supported him. Now she knows the same about Palin and McCain, so she rejects Palin, chastises McCain and rejects Obama. Psycho--that's the way I'd describe it. Just plain psycho.

user-pic

Agree 100%. Noonan is an kooky apparatchik of The Party:

She is not as thoughtful or persuasive as Joe the Plumber, who in an extended cable interview Thursday made a better case for the Republican ticket than the Republican ticket has made......If they had stood for conservative principle and the full expression of views, instead of attempting to silence those who opposed mere party, their movement, and The Party, would be in a better, and healthier, position.

The nation would be in better shape if Republican tools and dead enders like Noonan moved to survivalist compounds, buried their guns (to keep the UN from seizing them), and let reality based citizens run the country.

user-pic

Noonan is an old-school respectable conservative who is obviously struggling with what her party and movement have become. Hopefully she'll have the courage to help rebuild a dignified proper conservatism after their crushing defeat in 2 1/2 weeks.

How about this racist?

"If they had stood for conservative principle and the full expression of views, instead of attempting to silence those who opposed mere party, their movement, and the party, would be in a better, and healthier, position."

Noonan indeed is struggling with what her party has become. And what is unsaid, but there, fascist.

user-pic

Dems should not be gloating too much here over GOP mistakes, because if anyone remembers -- this is exactly where the DNC was in 02 -- totally out of ideas and gas. Howard Dean has turned out to be a good chairman and the 50-state strategy is smart, but Democrats are going to have to demonstrate they can actually govern better, and so far -- they're not. Congress approval rating is worse than Bush's. We're seeing the same cronyism, lack of accountability, and incompetence. Reid and Pelosi must go and the sooner the better. Neither Obama or any other Democrat should view the coming landslide as a blank check. they better get the message our support is conditional on results.
