Walmart: Greatest Corporation in History?

Recently I picked up Sam Walton's autobiography "Made in America".  Can't really recommend it.  Gave a little bit of useful information, but was really pretty dry.  Sam Walton comes across as a pretty corny redneck... though I do admire his fanatical values of thrift, which he apparently carried into his personal life.

It did occur to me though, that perhaps Walmart really is the greatest corporation in the history of the world.  Granted, there is no objectivity in a judgment like this.  Apple is cool. Microsoft is incredibly formidable.  There are a lot of good choices out there.

The reason I find Walmart so inspiring is because no other company is so closely associated with the economic doctrine of comparative advantage.  Through the products it retails, Walmart has indirectly transformed the world economy. They have brought thousands and thousands of jobs to foreign nations, nations that would be far worse off without them. They've also dramatically improved the standard of living for poor and working class Americans by slashing prices.

I don't think any book or article has really captured the magic of this company.    I've heard there is a Penn and Teller skit defending Walmart, I'd love to see it.

This is also a good article:  here.

Walking into a Walmart can be a near religious experience.  You see ethnic diversity, you see the future of America, the vibrant America that has lots of children and will someday inherit the nation.  But the experience becomes even more awe inspiring when one considers the experience of the workers who created shirts, shoes and radios being sold here. What must it be like for a Chinese villager, willing to travel thousands of miles for the chance to work in a factory to make products to be sold in Walmart? Perhaps the adventure of a lifetime. They certainly wouldn't be so eager to go if it wasn't  an amazing opportunity.

In short, Walmart is a wonder of the world. Unlike the pyramids, no one had to lose their rights for it to for it be created.

I really do wish TPM had tags. That way I wouldn't have to guess that this is a snark.

Based on the article and his previous blogs... sorry to say it's not.

Syn, thanks for the link. This is a very comprehensive list of all the positive things Walmart is doing.

I find the portion on child labor the most provocative. I wish parents could allow their kids to work in this country. But hey, you have the government to tell you how to be a parent, such an improvement right?

As your name pirate suggests... you are a truly warped and sick man.

Thank you for witless reply.

But what about my last name? Clearly Rothbard suggests incredible greatness. Here's an article about possibly the most original thinker of the 20ths century:

I will consider being called witless by the likes of you a grand compliment. Thanks!

You're welcome Syn City.. =)

The funny thing about Rothbard because of policies he abhorred he was able to espouse a liberation philosophy that would throw economies into complete turmoil. Ah the joyous life of an intellectual who never has to test his theories in the lab of reality.

So pirate if this is your role model have it. You will accomplish just as much a Rothbard . . . not much.

"you will accomplish just as much a Rothbard"

You are my new best friend forever.

If one had to choose a company that has excelled at optimizing profit at "all costs," you have to hand it to them. The company is totally lacking in altruism or a social conscience. Walmart only compromises its' bottom line when that compromise will, ultimately, improve it. Rest assured...Nothing good is cheap and nothing cheap is good!

You have a pretty strange definition of a religious experience; that's pretty tell, Mr. Pirate. You get some odd jollies at trying to poke out are eyes here with a sharp stick.
There are many US companies that have gone out of business so that Walmart could become the ONLY store in many neighborhoods. The great Rubbermaid company was so screwed by Walmart price-fixers that they had to close. I am sure there are many others.
Chinese people left their agricultural jobs to flock to the cities in order to live in high-rise buildings in tiny sleeping pods and live like ants; they paid for accomodations and food, trying to save a bit of their wages for better lives. Now with the economic condtions, many are returning to the land--there jobs were Made Redundant.
Nice job, Walmart. Nice job, Pirate.

Seriously Wendy, I recognize that liberals are are very intelligent people with some mistaken ideas.

There are so many good libertarians who used to be liberals, you need to be exposed to the truth.
