Eye of the Culture War Storm
This testimonial on Newsweek Online is a worthwhile exercise in keeping culture war issues in perspective and not letting them preclude positive interactions. What's so appealing about the story, however, is precisely the fact that Tatiana's inlaws, at least in their interactions with her, are unlike many of their fellow creationists, who want to use public schools to indoctrinate children into sectarian belief systems while falsely labeling them science, and who favor making space for prayer as an official school activity, even if allegedly voluntary (we know kids are never subjected to peer pressure, right?). In fact, a secular take on schooling, like the separation of church and state generally, facilitates happy stories like this one.
