Investigations: Oh, the Horror
In low, sinister tones, Republican pundits and pols have been warning that Democrat majorities would launch investigations of the administration. The horrific import of this possibility is supposed to be obvious, and it is said to transcend the alleged Democratic intention to pursue impeachment. Republicans have forgotten their own arguments, used while investigating former President Clinton and when extolling free markets, about the glories of accountable systems. So they might consider one of their own talking points that's actually more relevant to this situation than to the invasion of people's privacy and liberty from the surveillance programs: "If you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about." President Bush and the GOP should keep that in mind. Because where problems do exist in government policy and procedure, especially in a time of war, gathering information is the first step to correcting problems. And that's supposed to be everyone's intention who's involved with public service.
