McCain's instinct is to follow Obama.
Something similar happened in the debate with Brokaw. Brokaw warned Obama about the time and Obama said he would keep talking because it was an important point to clarify. When McCain wanted more time he asked permission.
While not overtly noticed by the audience, I think it's these sorts of things people mean when they say that Obama "looks" more presidential. That, and he's not twitching and grimacing like an overdosed caffeine fiend.
