Sanity?

One thing I don't understand: wasn't Robert Gates touted as a Wise Man that would at least keep this sort of garbage under control?

Was he not confirmed post-haste by the Senate, in a fit of Broder-certified bipartisanship, amidst courteous bows to his "qualifications"? Was he not actually part of the Iraq Study Group, whose only memorable recommendation was that shunning diplomacy with Iran and Syria in particular was demented?

This is just plain madness.

Ah, so now our military thinks they can actually spot Iranian's from the air trying to sneak into Iraq? Well isn't that special. Sometimes I don't think the failures in Iraq are all GWB's fault, that our military is so full of ignoramuses at the officer level that they couldn't find a wet paper bag to fight their way out of.

What makes them think Iranians are going to sneak across the border? Hell, they are going to hold a press confrence when they do it. Read what Iran's ambassador to Iraq has to say about it. Iran is preparing to open the first "wholly owned subsidiary bank" of a foreign country in Iraq. Volunteering to pump millions into Iraqi reconstruction. Volunteering to send their best troops to Iraq to train the Iraqi army (well hell, after 3 years it's damned obvious that our army can't do the job).  Looks like the "coalition of the willing" just got a new partner (like it or not).
