During the CT primary, apologists for Lieberman made this argument--that he was a liberal on everything but the war. This was never true (he's always been something of a cultural conservative)--but after his support for McCain in the presidential election and now his turn against public healthcare, there's no way Lieberman can be considered anything close to a liberal. The Democratic establishment should have stood firmly behind the primary winner--Ned Lamont--and fought Lieberman tooth and nail. But once again, the party without a backbone folded. Now they should kick him out of their caucus, but of course they won't. The Democrats are just pathetic losers, squandering their best opportunity for political dominance in decades by failing to differentiate themselves from the Republicans and instead cowering and caving every time some right winger criticizes them. It's almost certain that we'll have a Republican majority and maybe a Republican president again in four years. With Democrats like Liberman and Baucus (and Obama?), maybe we already do.

Thank you for representing your constituents and saying what you think, in spite of partisan recriminations and primary challenges, for so many years. I appreciate your seriousness, and your integrity. It may be lost on many of your fellow Senators, but it is not lost on your constituents or those around the country who respect the rare public figure who isn't interested in spouting the party line for the sake of his career.
That's about how I feel. I don't know that Joe is right or wrong on health care, but I know Joe.

Why are defense budgets, insurance industry profits, and Iraq so important, but over forty million uninsured Americans, and the costs they incur through emergency room care that we all pick up, not?
