If he does run to the Republicans and join their caucus and vote spitefully against the Dems, it's not all bad, as that will likely seal his fate in the 2012 election in 4 years, and after he loses, President Obama will have a better Connecticut Dem Senator to work with in his second term.

The problem with the question, I think from Jake Tapper of ABC, was the sort of gotcha tone and the negative framing, which suggested that Tapper had bought into the right-wing stuff about Obama and Iran.

The way it was asked, the answer was obviously who gives a flying fig that Ahmadinejad wrote a letter to Obama congratulating him and obviously Obama's first priority as president-elect is not to send a diplomatic mission to Iran. Unfortunately, that answer was too impolitic for Obama to give.
