Bill Moyers vs. CBS News' Mark Knoller

CBS News' Mark Knoller takes issue with Bill Moyers:

Did we report what the President said about his case for war? Of course we did. That’s our job. Did we also report that his views were challenged or disputed by others? Absolutely. Were questions raised about the veracity of the president’s arguments? Certainly.

But to charge that the White House press was “compliant” and cheered the President’s arguments for war plainly misrepresents the facts.

Here's my view of the problem.

The press was "compliant" in that they reported the White House line uncritically. Any rebuttals always came at the end of the story in a throwaway line.

If the Bush/Cheney administration announces that gravity doesn't exist, what would they then report?

"President Says No Gravity; Some Scientists Skeptical."

What should they report?

"President Wrong on Gravity."

But would the MSM ever do that? No, of course not. It doesn't matter how wrong Bush or Cheney may be, they will never, ever point that out in such a direct manner, even if it's obvious and clearly called for.
