Compare and contrast Yglesias and Cooper

I think we have a Matt Cooper problem. Here's a little illustration:

Jared Bernstein was on a call with bloggers yesterday to discuss the stimulus plan, the financial rescue plan, and how they complement each other. Matt Cooper's take is here. Matt Yglesias' take is here.

Yglesias relays Bernstein's explanation of how the success of the stimulus package depends on a successful financial rescue, and links to a useful further discussion of how the bits of the Geithner plan fit together. I came away enlightened.

Cooper reports, essentially, that Bernstein was willing to arrange a call with bloggers. I came away looking for other bloggers on the call interested in reporting what Bernstein said.

I don't want to hate on Cooper, he is by all accounts a fine and insightful reporter. But he's neither reporting nor providing much insight on TPM. I'm just concerned about the opportunity cost here; we could have another Schor, Kleefeld, or Roth; we could have a finance or economics reporter; we could have a Cooper using his DC rolodex to help readers understand the thinking and constraints behind confusing policy moves in the administration (cf. Geithner's non-plan*).

I first began to notice Cooper during the HHS conversations, and was negatively impressed by the lack of content, breathless tone of his pieces.

I don't want to lay into the guy, but he's a waste of space so far. Marshall needs to shepherd him a bit, help him to figure out this bloggy thing with the series of tubes and all. I'm sure he can add some value.

I can't imagine anyone is surprised at Matt Cooper's lack of insight and content. Doesn't anyone remember this boob from the Judith Miller fiasco.

Just remember he didn't come out of it looking too good. A bit too insidery for me to trust him. I dislike it when I have to read something with half my mind on the question of who is feeding him the info and with what agenda.

It's like you were reading my mind with that last comment.

Matt's a steady hand, folks, and he's the TPMDC editor, so unless you have simply been out of the local loop, you ought to know he's an honest broker and an objective reporter, more often than not.

I think there are some trollish types among us sitting in judgement on our intrepid TPM crew, I would dare any of you naysayers to take on the daily challenges this crew has to face.

Watta buncha crybaby compulsive critics. Take some time to know your subjects and your issues before you spout your opinion, if you want it respected.

Criticism from the gut is never as productive as criticism from the mind.

"you ought to know he's an honest broker and an objective reporter, more often than not."
- yes. the discussion got a bit side-tracked. My post was meant to be constructive criticism for Matt and TPM. It was less about any particular opinion Matt expresses, and more about the lack of content of his posts, thus far.

- Look, yes they put their lives on the line for us everyday, yes I do support our troops, yes they are american heroes. But Matt's posts suck.
