"You Lie" was a Stunt
I want to preface this by saying that what I am about to say
actually has the effect of furthering the GOP strategy of distracting from the
substance of health care reform, but I think it is important to understand.
Rep. Joe Wilson's insists that what he did was spontaneous. This is
interesting. This insistence of spontaneity is suspiciously similar to the GOP
leadership's insistence during August that all of the madness at the town-hall
meeting was just "grassroots anger". August wasn't spontaneous and neither was
Joe Wilson's outburst.
How do we know? Joe Wilson didn't say "You Lie" once. He said it
twice. The second utterance occurred just moments after the first, and is the
one that can be heard loud and clear because everyone else is silent. The first
utterance, however, occurred while many other GOP congressmen were shouting and
making other noises. If you listen closely you can hear it.
This was a stunt. It was a conscious effort either by Joe Wilson himself or by
the GOP leadership to change the subject. It is classic media strategy.
Everyone knows that outrageous accusations or statements will create
"news", and the media (especially cable news) loves controversy. So
instead of talking about the substance of the President's proposal, we are
talking about this loser Congressman from South Carolina who made an ass of himself. This
is what the GOP wants, and the media is happy to help because they get to
dissect a controversy instead of talking about the effects of new taxes on
insurance companies or whether or not insurance companies will be forced to
provide 100% reimbursement for preventive care. Oh yeah, and by the way,
Wilsongate gets better ratings on cable and doesn't require any policy
knowledge or research to cover it.
So why point this out if it will just make the story last longer? Because the media at large needs to finally realize how their inability to escape manipulation is hurting our country. The main reason we don't already have healthcare reform is the media's inability to cut through the b.s. and spin and present the American people with the facts.

Thanks for saying this... It has been on my mind since that night, and my own feeling has been overwhelmingly confirmed by the media's coverage since... it's all about Joe Wilson.
Not: "Are for or against Obama's proposals for health care reform?"
Instead: Are you for or against Joe Wilson? Is he a hero or a goat?Did he apologize convincingly ? Did somebody put him up to it? Will he be punished? Yakity yak.
There, now I've added to the distraction. Sigh...

You are exactly right. That was my immediate reaction -- it was a stunt!
Calculated to divert attention and swallow up part of the news cycle following the speech. And, what a surprise, it worked!
(And note, please, that effect is totally independent of whether or not we talk about it. We're like individuals buying or selling stocks -- the price of GE doesn't change at all, whether I sell my 200 shares, or buy another 200.)
Since it worked so well, you can be sure they'll try it again. And again. And again. Only each new stunt will have to be slightly more outrageous than the last.
And thus our republic slowly crumbles.

It's been nagging at me, too. There were definitely two shouts - Pelosi and Biden were looking over there already because Pelosi heard the first one. (And, if you want to buy this theory, the first one also had the advantageous effect of making sure any camera in the area would point to the right place.)
Does one really make a spontaneous, impulsive utterance twice?? Doesn't the inappropriateness of your action hit you right away? A dog that bites twice in a row -- even if there are only nanseconds between the first and second bite -- is considered much more dangerous that one that bites, immediately realizes it's done something verboten, and then backs off.
And I disagree -- I think this should get attention. 1) It may give some good faith people who take things at face value reason to look a bit harder at this and other "spontaneous, impulsive" actions that just happen to cause a diversion at an important time, and 2)if there is anything to it, the Rightists (I won't condemn the whole GOP) are put on notice that their days of being able to do this convincingly have ended. They either have to come up with a new diversionary tactic or -- hey, here's a thought! -- engage in sensible discussion of the issues.

I agree and we should all agree. His 15 minutes are up. He's been publicly smacked down, his competitor is now only one point behind and $750,000 richer by last report on MSNBC. Enough distraction. The time is now.
Yesterday on Randi Rhodes a guy called up to challenge her and she asked him whether he had been to any town hall meetings, what did he think of the way people behaved? His response was not really analyzed. I think Randi missed a great chance for a follow-up question. The guy declared, "Yes, I've been to a few", or maybe he said several. I'm using an old memory here. It was yesterday. My point? In how many towns does this guy reside? Does he vote more then once, too?

Judging from the serious hit on Wilson's poll numbers and from the boost to his Democratic opponent's fundraising, this stunt earns its rightful place in the annals of Jackass.

Let's see how much GOP cash it will take to put this Humpty back together again, especially when there will be plenty if not more cash on the Dem side.

Moving on.

I'm sure it was done as a diversion. But I believe that Rep. Wilson will be held accountable by the Law of Unintended Consequences. This wasn't some nut or hired gun screaming during a town hall; this was a member of the United States Congress. I think some of his constituents are embarrassed by his behavior, and it won't take too many votes to cost him his seat, especially when he is running against a well-financed former Marine.

I thought I heard Wilson shout that twice. But why did the leaders in the GOP get on him afterwards and encourage him to apologize? Maybe they weren't in on his plan. That may account for his frantic face in the interview this morning - he didn't realize the full consequences of his action.

What would they have done? condone it? People love their theatre.

I agree and I think that 'everything' that the many republicans did that night in bad form was intentional. All of it from the blackberry, to walking out, to holding whatever up in the air...
all with the exception of Senator Lindsey Graham's clap-fake out... for which he made amends by complaining publicly the next day about the tone the president used in giving his speech.
They have a plan and are very organized in their idiotic behavior.

btw they probably created a plan to prevent anyone from becoming moved by the president's speech:)

Of course it was a stunt. These thugs are experts at this kind of stuff and as far as expecting the media "to finally realize how their inability to escape manipulation is hurting our country. "
It ain't gonna happen. The media business, is all about business and ratings and unfortunately the print media is no better, given the state of newspapers.
Walter Cronkite said it best. It is up to the media to tell us what we need to know - not what they want us to know.!!!!!! That's how it used to be when news was separate and not for profit.

Well, there are stunts and there are stunts. The speech was pretty and progressive. So pretty that the "progressives" in Congress apparently figure that nothing progressive needs to be in the bill. So if you give a progressive speech and deliver a conservative bill, what do we call that?

You know I think you are right. That is how the camera got to him so fast.

I didn't think it was spontaneous. But instead of asking Obama if he accepted the phony apology, the media should have asked Wilson if he'd talked to anyone about shouting an invective.
Was it just coincidence that the outburst came from a GOP member where there would be little to no price to pay, for ending a tradition of a few hundred years?

This crossed my mind as well. I've actually heard more about Wilson since the speech than I have heard about the speech itself.

Whether Wilson's outburst was planned or not, what clearly had been planned is a GOP strategy to de-legitimize Obama as the right tried to do with Clinton. The tactic they used on Clinton was to continually attack his character. Slick Willy, White-Water, Vince Foster, Travel-gate, Haircut-gate, etc, Until Clinton finally himself handed the right what the had been searching for.
With Obama, the tactic is to attack his "Americaness". He's a Kenyan, a Muslim, a Marxist, a Terrorist, - he's black! The tactics are different from what they tried on Clinton, but the strategy is the same.
Wilson calling Obama a liar in front of Congress and the nation may signal a shift in GOP tactics with Obama. The, "he-isn't-one-of-us" attacks haven't really worked, they were a failure for the McCain/Palin campaign, and have mostly served to further isolate the GOP by radicalizing their base. Watch to see if character attacks, such as publicly yelling liar to Obama, become an increasingly used tactic. It too will fail as the GOP immolates itself to ashes.

Another way to see that its a stunt is by the smarmy smirks all his frat brothers seated by him are flashing. They know what is happening and enjoying every minute. Bunch of punks IMO.

He's a complete snake no question.
He apologizes for being forced to say he's sorry but he's still going to fight for South Carolinians not be be muzzled like that and by the way how come Obama's not apologizing and where is that colored boy's birth certificate?
That's what we've got here. Censure.

By way, his "apology" to the White House was just a warm up for more impudence, so why are we even looking at accepting another phony apology?
He wants to mock the colored President? Get ugly early I say, but I'll trust Speaker Pelosi to do it in her own way. We're at a million now. What's wrong with 2?

If you are saying wilson came there to yell "you lie", then of course its obvious he did.
But, this is just another example of how far we have come that words like this are said to get attention.
I had thought of blogging about it and still may, if I can work up the enthusiasm.

I think this sort of nonsense will continue to backfire on republicans as long as the democratic party responds with facts to counter the fiction.
The game is no longer about appealing to the fringes who have come to define the base of each party. The only persuadable voters left in America hate such rhetoric no matter where it comes from. The only way to know taking the high road works is to wait for midterms elections and I am afraid many on the left may have zero patience for that right now.
Absent a conservative "Mea culpa!" heard around the world, I suspect we are in for much more trench warfare in the years ahead.
