Why the outrage? AIG

Why is everyone so outraged about AIG giving out bonuses to its execs? That's what companies do. That's their reason for existence! It doesn't matter where that money came from, whether it's given to them from tax payers or extorted from insurance customers.

I'm not saying it's not wrong. I'm just surprised people are outraged that AIG did what it's built to do.

But what do you think?

Yeah, this is what they do. But, darn it, public companies in general, or any company with huge social reach and influence should have a sense of proportion. The era of the corporate statesman was a problematic one but there was at least some sense that these guys should have a connection to the real world -- that they could make 40 times the average employee's salary and not 400 and still live lavishly, for example. Or that if your company is being kept alive with public funds that you should at least try to act in the public interest.

I guess it was to be expected but it's still disappointing.
