National Republican Trust PAC's $5.2 Million Media Buys-$3.1 Million For TV Ads, $2.1 Million For ???
Note: In a previous post about the National Republican Trust PAC since deleted, I inadvertently referred to incorrect data about its expenditures which, according to FEC reports, are approximately $6.8 million through 11/14.
FactCheck.org accused the National Republican Trust PAC of producing "one of the sleaziest false TV ads of the campaign." That would be the one with a photo of Obama framed by Mohammed Atta's driver's license. The other two ads are just as despicable.
The National Republican Trust PAC is now trying to convince Georgia voters that if they don't send cash a.s.a.p., Saxby Chambliss will lose the runoff and Obama will have the sixty votes necessary to reinstitute the Fairness Doctrine and throw Rush, Hannity, O'Reilly and the rest of the wingnut radio roster off the air.
I summarized the PAC's financial data reported to the FEC through 11/14 in a Daily Kos diary together with background information about the organization. To date, the National Republican Trust PAC has reported $6.8 million of expenditures, $5,204,000 of which was specifically marked "Media Buy".
According to the New York Times, the National Republican Trust PAC spent a total of $3.1 million to broadcast its three anti-Obama ads on television, leaving $2.1 million in media buys unaccounted for.
Part or even all of the $2.1 million may have been spent on Drudge Report ads. Then the question is why did the well-known wingnuts running the National Republican Trust PAC need Joe Mercurio, a switch hitting political consultant from New York City, to place ads with Matt Drudge?
Scott Wheeler, PAC executive director, and Peter M. Leitner, treasurer, have collaborated with Drudge on countless Clinton "exposes" since the '90s. Wheeler produced the infamous Clinton "expose", The Mena Cover-Up; Drugs, Deception and the Making of A President". Together, Wheeler and Leitner produced "Trading with the Enemy: How the Clinton Administration Armed China".
How does Mercurio and his newly registered firm, the Philipse Brook Group, fit into this picture? And did the National Republican Trust PAC, registered with the FEC on 9/29, have $5.2 million in cash on hand at the end of October for those media buys?
Read on.
According to FEC records, the National Republican Trust PAC paid $5.2 million to the "Philips Brook Group" at 53 Philipse Brook Road in Garrison, NY for media buys. "Philips" appears to be mispelled because "Philipse Brook Group, Inc." was registered in New York on 8/19/08. The registered agent is Sherman F. Sosnow, a Brooklyn attorney.
Joseph C. A. Mercurio lives at 53 Philpse Brook Road, according to one online vendor. "Joe" Mercurio has been a political consultant in New York for more than thirty years and is often quoted in the media. He is sometimes referred to as a Democratic consultant and other times, as a Republican consultant. Recently, he has claimed he was a media consultant for Joe Biden's primary campaign but I looked at a handful of Biden's FEC records and didn't find his or his firm's name in any of them.
What I also did not find was any indication that Joe Mercurio is associated with the extreme right wing.
Why did Scott Wheeler and Peter Leitner, select Joe Mercurio to place $5.2 millon worth of controversial National Republican Trust PAC ads when any number of consultants closer to them could have done the job? Doesn't make sense.
Another other question I raised here and at the Daily Kos is whether the National Republican Trust PAC had the cash on hand to pay for the ads or did someone else guarantee the debt or extend credit. As far as I know, television networks are paid in cash for political ads and if Drudge or anyone else gave terms, he would have to justify why he did so.
The PAC was only registered with the FEC on 9/29. By 10/15, it had raised $463k and had a grand total of $205k in cash on hand. The National Republican Trust PAC had less than two weeks to raise more than $5 million which averages out to more than $400k a day.
Here are the PAC's payments to the Philipse Brook Group for media buys by the date they were entered in FEC records:
10/14 - $102,000 (10/15 Pre-General Report)
10/17 - $102,000
10/20 - $ 40,000
10/24 - $174,000
10/27 - $176,000
10/29 - $880,000
10/30 - $1,200,000
10/31 - $2,530,000
Total $5,204,000
The Post-General report is not due until 12/4 so we probably won't know how much the PAC raised after 10/15 until then.
Whoever is really behind the National Republican Trust PAC planned this media blitz well in advance if Joe Mercurio registered the Philipse Brook Group on 8/19 specifically to handle ad placements. The PAC was intentionally registered late in the campaign so most of the contributions and expenditures would not reported until December, well after Election Day.
Why put Joe Mercurio up as the front man?
I still don't understand how the network attorneys approved the Obama/Atta ad. As FactCheckorg wrote, the ad was false and offensive. Linking a presidential candidate to one of the most well known terrorists in the world was despicable and the networks should have flat out refused to run it but apparently none of them did.
The network execs should be fired on the spot if there was any funny business going on with these ads. I'm thinking pre-approval, pre-slotted, back door cash, etc.
There was a flurry of GOP dirty trick projects going on in the last few weeks of the campaign. "Hang ACORN in Effigy" was one. Ashley Todd's stunt was another (Any chance she is related to Brian Todd at NewsMax?). I forget what crap came outof Let Freedom Ring but whatever it was, it was funded by John Templeton. Etc., etc., etc.
If the National Republican Trust PAC was operating illegally in any way, now rather than later is the time to go after the guilty parties. Some people seem to think that Obama's victory signaled the end of right wing lunacy. Uh, uh. The sound of a cash register ringing was heard by every wingnut from Maine to Alaska on election night.
We need to remain ever vigliant.

This is interesting. Joe Mercurio's wife, Jennifer, is a lobbyist.
I wonder if she was the one who handled the $5.2 million in media buys for the National Republican Trust PAC. If she did, I'd like to hear about from her. With friends like Jennifer Mercurio, Obama doesn't need enemies.
According to a 2004 NY Times wedding announcement, Joseph C. A. Mercurio married Jennifer Byron who assumed his name and became his fourth wife.
In 11/06, Jennifer Mercurio became public affairs director of the American Geriatric Society. Her bio on p. 16 of the Society's first quarter 2007 newsletter includes her stint in C. Virginia Fields' office.
Joe Mercurio, of course, is best known for having been fired by Fields during her mayoral bid when a group photo used in the campaign was doctored to include an Asian couple for diversity.
From the AGS bio:
"...Mercurio served as Fields’ Deputy Counsel for Women’s Policy and Land Use and went on to work as an associate in the law offices of Howard Goldman.
For several years, Mercurio was Associate General Counsel & Director of State Legislative Affairs for the Entertainment Software Association, a post she held before becoming the Director of Government Relations & Legal Affairs for the YMCA of Greater New York. In 2004, Mercurio created JB Mercurio & Associates, Ltd., a successful full-service government and community affairs and fundraising firm, of which she is President. She also serves on several Boards, including the New York Alliance Against Sexual Assault, the Citizen’s Union Reform Leaders, and the New York Junior League Non-Profit Board Clearinghouse Committee."
In 10/07, Mercurio became head of the Entertainment Consumers Association's government affairs office "to direct its government relations and advocacy efforts."
According to the website, the ECA is a 501(c)(4) non-profit membership organization established to serve the needs of those who play computer and video games.
In other words, Jennifer Mercurio is a lobbyist.
She also claims to be an Obama fan and has posted on the campaign website.
Why in the world would extreme wingnuts like Scott Wheeler and Peter Leitner pay Jennifer or Joe Mercurio to place their sure-to-be controversial anti-Obama ads?
And why would the wingnuts have trusted the Mercurios enough to let them in on their vile, despicable scheme when it was still in the planning stage?
As I've said all along, something smells fishy.
(Jennifer Mercurio contributed $1,000 to Hillary Clinton's primary campaign in March 2007. Not that that means all that much on its own.)

Couple of oddball comments.
On her web page at MyObama and at least one other site, Jennifer Mercurio praises Joe Biden for the Violence Against Women Act. As I've noted before, Joe Mercurio claims he worked as a media consultant for Biden's campaign although I couldn't find his or his firm's name in any FEC filings.
Sounds screwy but what if Peter Leitner and Scott Wheeler were fronting the National Republican Trust PAC on behalf of the Mercurios or someone they represented.
Maybe this was a drive-by hit on Obama financed by disgruntled Dems. I have zero evidence and this is only speculation on my part.
Per NPR: "The National Republican Trust, for example, reported spending an incredible $6.6 million on the election, despite being founded in September."
I'll say it is incredible. I'll go so far as to say it is unbelievable.
On some right wing sites, Scott Wheeler claimed to have raised $1 million as of 10/24 but on other sites, the amount is $3 million.
Curious.

In an 11/18 Twitter comment, Joe Mercurio wrote "Quiet day, wife in DC, and a new media buy starting."
According to an 11/18 FEC report filed by the National Republican Trust PAC, it paid almost $8k to Rick Wilson of Intrepid Media in Tallahassee for "media production". Intrepid Media is the firm that did the three despicable anti-Obama ads broadcast on national television.
I think the media produced by Intrepid is probably the anti-Obama/pro-Chambliss one on the National Republican Trust PAC website (which I haven't watched yet).
Looks like Joe Mercurio made the $5.2 million buy to place those despicable Obama ads for the National Republican Trust PAC.
Nice husband you got there, Jennifer.

From the FEC summary pa
ge for the National Republican Trust PAC:
As of 11/12/08:
Total receipts $10,342,756
Individual expenditures $10,337,756
Total disbursements $8,585,077
Independent expenditures $7,974,359
Cash on hand $1,757,67
Debts $127,454
Details of who contributed after 10/15 are not available until 12/4.
My spreadsheet updated through 11/14 had expenditures at $6.9 million which included individual expenditures from 24-Hour Notices and the 10/15 Pre-General.
Contributions through 10/15 were $463k of which $255k was unitemized.
I'll update my speadsheet later to see how it ties into the FEC summary.
I'm not sure if the NY Times is right about how many times the National Republican Trust PAAC ads ran, in particular the Obama/Wright one. Nor am I sure the PAC only spent $3.1 million on television advertising.
The NYT claim that the ad first aired on 11/4 is out and out wrong. The Freepers claim the ad ran in OH, PA and FL on or before 10/27.
A couple of days ago, Joe Mercurio (Twitter-natpol) said he was making a media buy and a dayh or so later, the National Republican Trust PAC reported that it paid $101k to the Philipse Brook Group for a media buy.
I think it's a safe bet that Joseph C. A. Mercurio, National Political Services, placed all of the National Republican Trust's sleazy anti-Obama ads under the name of his new firm, Philipse Brook Group, registered in NYS on 8/19 by Sherman F. Sosnow, a Brooklyn attorney.
Joe Mercurio married his fourth wife, Jennifer Byron, in 2004. Jennifer Mercurio, as she now known, is a lobbyist. She supported Hillary Clinton, then Obama. Mercurio is also active in a couple of women's issue groups issue, with a focus on violence against women.
The name of Jennifer Mercurio's consulting firm is JB Mercurio & Associates, Ltd.
It looks like Joe Mercurio registered the Philipse Brook Group specifically to handle media buys for the National Republican Trust PAC which means the plans for the ad campaign were in place before mid-August.
If I planned a hit-and-run media attack on Obama in late October, I wouldn't have counted on contributions made after 10/15 to fund it. Nor would I have waited until after 10/15 to get network approval for my sure-to-be controversial ads.
I'd be surprised if the three ads took more than a day or two to put together nor would a lot of out-of-pocket expenses have been incurred making them.
The whole thing smells fishy to me.

Irwin Katsof, Doheney Group - Per Tikun Olam blog posts here and here.
Rick Davis-John McCain-Joe Lieberman-Tom Ridge
"Several months ago Huffington Post reported that Rick Davis, McCain’s campaign manager and lobbyist at Davis-Manafort, not only consulted for the pro-Russian Ukrainian political party, but that he also had substantial real estate holdings in Ukraine which had done very well for him.
One of Aish HaTorah’s founders is Rabbi Irwin Katsof, a billionaire international business consultant who also has substantial real estate holdings in Ukraine. Katsof runs several companies–the Doheny Global Group, AVest Ukraine, Dohenyavest, and Global Capital Associates. I have not yet been able to discover under what company name/s Davis has been investing in Ukraine or whether there is any overlap between his interests and those of Katsof. If there is, this would be an obvious reason for Katsof/Aish/Clarion to be advancing Davis’ and McCain’s political interests.
The Doheny website publicizes a tour of Israel and the Ukraine to mark Israel’s 60th anniversary. “Special guests” on the trip that took place June-July, 2008 were Republican luminaries Tom Ridge, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and others. Clearly, Katsof-Doheny’s business dealings with Republicans are long and deep."
On a different note, is Scott L. Wheeler, Executive Director, related to Dr. Jack Wheeler?
November 22, 2008 2:38 PM | Reply | Permalink
I'm not sure when or if Irwin Katsof crossed paths with Peter Leitner or Rick Davis but his investment company, the Doheny Group, has major investments in Ukraine.
Leitner and another Doheny Group partner, Jacob Rheuban, sit on the board of the US-Ukraine Business Council.
On 11/12/08, Katsof issued a press release about the Doheny Group's plan to invest $100 million or more in Georgia to build 100 megawatts of hydroelectricity facilities. Apparently, the US government has made a $1 billion two-year pledge to help rebuild Georgia after the war.
The Doheny Group website has photos of Katsof with everyone from Tom Ridge to Gary Bauer.
According to Richard Silverstein at the Tikun Olam website (linked in previous comment), Irwin Katsof was one of the founders of the anti-Muslim Clarion Fund, the political arm of a Aish HaTorah, "a network of Jewish educational centers in 35 branches on five continents."
Silverstein has been trying to figure out why Aish HaTorah and the Clarion Fund, would be using their films, Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West and Third Jihad, in thinly veiled attempts to help John McCain’s presidential campaign.
In 9/08, the Clarion Fund distributed 28 million dvds with the Obsession film on it through newspapers in mostly swing states. The NY Times was one of the papers.
30,000 copies of the film were distributed for free to members of the right wing Republican Jewish Coalition. (I seem to recall the RJC was up to some kind of campaign shenanigans.)
The National Republican Trust PAC is linked to the Orthodox Jewish community through Jonathan Ambush, NRT PAC assistant treasurer, and Sherman F. Sosnow, the Brooklyn attorney who registered the Philipse Brook Group on behalf of, I assume, Joe Mercurio.
It's a fair bet that at least half of the $0 million in contributions to the National Republican Trust PAC are not itemized.

Joshua M. Ambush, not Jonathan.
Law Offices of Joshua Ambush website:
"Joshua Ambush founded the Law Offices of Joshua M. Ambush, LLC in 2001. Since then, Josh has emerged as a specialist in complex federal civil litigation, claims against foreign sovereigns in U.S. courts, terrorism law and corporate governance, immigration, commercial contracts and governmental affairs. He is currently a member of the Plaintiffs' Executive Committee for September 11th multi-district litigation.
In addition, Josh spearheaded an initiative to condemn foreign countries that aid the transnational abduction of children by non custodial parents for practicing a contemporary form of slavery as part of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. He also was counsel to parents of kidnapped American children held in Saudi Arabia against their will, and advised Chairman Dan Burton and witnesses during Congressional hearings."
The website lists one other attorney, David E. Austin but in a suit filed against the PLO et al, Terri Sneider is listed as of counsel for the firm.
Ambush appears to be associated with one of Leitner's organizations, the Washington Center for Peace & Justice. I haven't found any info re center, however.
Ambush used the center's name when he filed a federal lawsuit in 3/08 on behalf of Isaac Hersh, a teenager whose parents sent him to a disciplinary institution on the island of Jamaica.
Hersh's parents, Michael and Miriam Hersh, apparently are well-known in the Jewish Orthodox community in Brooklyn.
The story from the Yiddish newswire, VIN News, about Hersh's release from the facility lists all of the heavyweight members of the Orthodox community who rescued him (with the help of Senator Clinton's office).

I pieced together some info re Washington Center For Peace & Justice.
The organization was first registered in 12/19/00 in Maryland as "The Washington Peace Center, Inc.", not to be confused with the left-leaning organization of many years, the Washington Peace Center.
The original articles of incorporation are not online but the info on the MD SoS site does not indicate that it was non-profit. The center's address was given as 3205 Nerak Road, Baltimore MD 21208. The registered agent was Joshua M. Ambush at the same address.
In 3/02, Ambush filed a change of name amendment, changing the center's name to "The Washington Center For Peace and Justice, Inc."
Peter Leitner is listed as president and Vaughn Forrest as secretary on the name change amendment. Vaughn S. Forrest, former chief of staff for Rep. Bill McCollum (R-FL), is linked to a number of shadowy intelligence ops including Iran Contra. More later.
In July 2002, another amendment was submitted, changing the center's purpose. The directors are listed as follows:
Peter Leitner - President
Ken Stenthem - Vice President
James Cole - Secretary/Treasurer
The center's registration was suspended in 10/04 for failure to file a personal property return.
It was revived on 3/17/08 by Ambush, now at 1726 Reisertown Road in Baltimore. On 3/20/08, Ambush filed a lawsuit in the center's name against the State Dept. in the Isaac Hersch case (see above).
Around 2002, some Arab-run websites posted the exact same complaint about the center's Saudi bashing:
"The Washington Center for Peace and Justice, Inc., a charitable organization based in Arlington, VA, has an elegant Web site that focuses on “victims of Saudi kidnapping” and calls for a boycott of Saudi oil import. Featured on the Web site are the gripping June 2002 testimonies before the US House of Representatives by Monica Stowers, Pat Roush and Ria Davis. Also to be found on the Web site is a statement by discredited terrorist expert Daniel Pipes, who wages a vicious personal crusade against Islam in the press. Thanks to this organization, Saudi Arabia, whose nationals are involved in 46 child custody cases, receives more adverse publicity and public scrutiny, than, for example, Germany, with 116 similar “kidnapping” cases."
The center doesn't appear to be online anymore and I can't find the old internet address.
Even though the center does not appear to be currently operating, Leitner continues to give the impression that it is.
From a Leitner bio:
"He is also the President of the Washington Center for Peace & Justice a non-profit organization providing assistance to victims of terrorism and their families. Dr. Leitner holds the Power of Attorney for the family and estate of John O'Neill the former head of counterterrorism for the FBI who was killed in the collapse of the World Trade Center. He is managing three major 9-11 cases in the Federal court in NY on behalf of the O'Neill's. He also assists children and parents victimized by child abductions to Saudi Arabia by former spouses. The Center assists victims obtain legal counsel and helps advance their cause in the United Nations and other national and international fora."
More later.

Re Vaughn S. Forrest
In 1992, Forrest and Youssef Bodansky, an extreme right wing "terror expert", collaborated on a controversial paperentitled "Iran's European Springboard?"
The Washington Report On Middle East Affairs was very critical of the paper (for good reason):
"Among its controversial conclusions are charges that: Bosnian President Alija Izetbegovic and his government are bent on creating an Islamic republic in the Balkans as part of an international Islamist conspiracy; Bosnian Muslim forces are killing their own people and foreigners in an attempt to provoke international intervention or provide an excuse for Muslim atrocities against Serbs; Iran is infiltrating Islamist terrorists into Bosnia to prepare for a general Muslim uprising in Western Europe; and this Islamic revolution will be the result of Muslims' innate hatred and distrust of the West and Islam's inherent incompatibility with liberal society."
More recently, Forrest reportedly accompanied Rep. Peter Hoekstra, Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, when Hoekstra traveled to Paris to meet with with a front man working for Iranian arms dealer and Iran-Contra figure Manucher Ghorbanifar for a second time in 2006.
Forrest was a co-founder, along with Ken Alibek, of AFG BioSolutions, Inc. in 2004. AFG is now under the umbrella of MaxWell Biocorporation, a pharamceutical based in Ukraine. As previously noted, Peter Leitner is president of MaxWell USA, a US subsidiary.
Alibek, a microbiologist originally from Kazakhstan, defected to the US from Russia in 1992. In Russia, Alibek had held the top position in Biopreparat, the civilian agency that ran the Soviets’ secret biological-weapons program. As such, he became widely regarded in Washington as one of the premier authorities on the threat of bio-weaponery.
In July 2007, the LA Times published a very critical story, FEAR Inc.", by David Willman about Alibek hyped the threat from bioterrorism and influenced the US government's decision to spend billions of dollars to counter anthrax, smallpox and other potential bioterrorism agents.
From the Times:
"Alibek’s public profile rose after the Sept. 11 attacks and the mailings of anthrax a month later that killed five people.
Appearing before a House subcommittee on national security in October 2001, Alibek said that earlier “attempts to wipe out Iraq’s biological weapons capability were probably not successful.” He also told the subcommittee that Russian biological weapons experts had “emigrated to rogue nations such as Iraq.” As the U.S.-led war got underway in March 2003, Alibek said during an online discussion hosted by the Washington Post: “There is no doubt in my mind that [Saddam] Hussein has WMD.”
According to the Times, Alibek has been awarded more than $28 million since then in federal grants.
Alibek ran a research program at George Mason University called the "National Center for Biodefense and Infectious Diseases"from 2001 until he was fired in 2005.
As noted previously, Leitner runs a counterrrorism program at George Mason U.
George Mason U. is a bastion of ultra-conservatism and receives funding from a number of extreme right wing sources such as the Koch brothers, Charles and David, who own Koch Industries.
More later.

Tight group, this bunch. As noted above, Ken Stethem was appointed vice president of Leitner's Washington Center For Peace & Justice in 7/02.
In 1985, Stethem's brother, Robert, a Navy Seabee diver, was on a TWA flight hijacked by Hezbollah to Lebanon. When Hezbollah's demands were not met, they tortured Stethem, then shot him and dumped his body on the tarmac at the Beirut airport. To honor Robert Stethem, the Navy named a destroyer the "Robert Stethem".
In 2005, Robert Stethem's name was again in the news because one of the hijackers in prison in Germany was released in exchange for a German woman held by terrorists.
Ken Stethem was interviewed a number of times about how he and his family felt about the release of the hijacker.
Kenneth J. Stethem, retired Navy Seal and explosive ordinance disposal expert, is now in the stun gun business. He owns Aegis Industries which has a fancy website but doesn't list a physical address.
Yossef Bodansky is a on the Aegis board of advisors:
"Until December 2004, Yossef was the Director of the Congressional Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare at the US House of Representatives. He remains as advisor to the US Congress. He is also the Director of Research at the International Strategic Studies Association, as well as a Senior Editor for the Defense and Foreign Affairs group of publications. He is the author of nine books ...
In the 1980s, he acted as a senior consultant for the US Department of Defense and the US Department of State. He was also a visiting scholar in the Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies. He is the only representative from Congress at the US-Russia Dialogue Group and at the US-European Dialogue Group: The Transatlantic Drift. He is the Senior Professional Staff of the Leadership of the US House of Representatives responsible for the analysis of the situation in key regions of the world, and for formulating US policy towards the important countries in those regions. An important part of his task is maintaining contact with the highest level of select few Governments in order to better understand their positions."
I'm starting to wonder if these guys are fooling around in the over-the-counter market which everyone knows is crooked.
In late 2006, Aegis Industries was supposed to merge with a publicly traded penny stock company with no operations namd Major Creations after another Navy Seal, Philip Evancoe, had just beeen named president of Major.
In a series of 8-Ks filed with the SEC, Major Creations became Fortified Holdings, then somehow it was Aegis Industries. But the merger with Stethem's Aegis Industries had fallen through and the new Aegis Industries merged with another company, Z5.
I have no idea how two Aegis Industries came about or why but it doesn't sound right to me.
Also in late 2006, AFG BioSolutions, Inc. was involved with another penny stock, Viragen, that has since stopped trading.

On 10/19/05, Joshua Ambush bought a townhouse in Frederick MD for $330k, according to MD property records. He did not sell another townhouse he owned on Nerak Road in Pikesville.
Ambush's property is less than 3 miles away from Fort Dietrick and the home of Dr. Bruce E. Ivins.
It is also less than 3 miles away from Dr. Allan Levy's office. Levy is the psychiatrist who employed Jean C. Duley, the counselor who reported Ivins, her patient, to the police and then sought a restraining order against him.
Probably a coincidence but, on the other hand, the Hatfill case was dead in the water by that time. Time for a new suspect in the anthrax investigation and these characters are in the propaganda business.
Next up: Peter Leitner's fearmongering in Florida this spring. Leitner held seminars for seniors in Boca and Jupiter on how to identify a terrorist and generally tried to scare the pants off of the oldsters. Dirty campaign trick is what it was.

Wingnuts at work. Peter Leitner holds seminars in Jupiter and Boca Raton in which he advises senior citizens about how to i.d. a terrorist.
From the website of the Citizens for National Security (CNS), a membership-fee nonprofit organization:
"There is a large body of ordinary citizens within the U.S. population which is vitally concerned over threats to our national security - and would like to become proactive in addressing them. They cut through all segments of our society, from youthful leaders in the private sector to seniors with a great deal of available time and a lifetime of potentially valuable experience. They all see themselves as patriots, however, and want to contribute in some way to thwarting those that seek to bring us harm. Citizens for National Security educates, motivates and activates these people.
Citizens for National Security (CNS), a membership-fee nonprofit organization:
Distributes documents, CD's and e-mails containing insider information related to intelligence and national security;
Establishes face-to-face member contact through regional and national conferences, seminars and workshops;
Guarantees instant 7x24 response to members who report suspicious activities or behavior which might be associated with terrorism or other extremist threats;
Provides an interactive e-mail and telephone clearinghouse for dialogue on matters of national security with CNS principals and their team;
Organizes task forces to focus and act upon specific issues - for example, the penetration of radical Islamic ideology into public K-12 school programs.
CNS fills a vital need. With its people, contacts and experiences in the intelligence and national security arenas, and its concept of two-way dialogue with its members, it offers an efficient forum and format that brings concerned citizens into the national security mix."
Check out the senior citizens in the photo taken at a CNS seminar in Boca on how to identfy a terrorist.

Let me try again.
I posted about Joe Mercurio and the Republican National Trust PAC at Room 8 because it is frequented by NYC insider political types. In fact, Mercurio has posted there on occasion.

I suppose the American Security Coalition goes hand in hand with Citizens For National Security since Peter Leitner and William A. Saxton are involved with both of them. Daniel Pipes, Steve Emerson and Walid Phares are also on board at the ASC.
Besides linking to every other organization associated with these extreme wingnuts, the ASC links to the anti-Islam film, Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West".
The reportedly was involved in the production of "Obsession" and I think Leitner is involved with EMET.
Hmmm...

In my last comment, I meant to say that the Endowment for Middle East Truth (EMET)was reportedly involved in producing "Obsession" and I think Leitner is involved with the EMET.
I know Leitner has ties to Frank Gaffney, Daniel Pipes and James Woolsey who are on the EMET advisory board.

On Wednesday, September 10, 2008, EMET hosted the first Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Policy Seminar Series to a packed house on Capitol Hill.
In attendance were members of congress, staffers, members of the Washington policy establishment, and the public at larger. This seminar was devoted to the memory of the 2,974 Americans who had lost their lives on September 11, 2001, and explored the many subtle and pernicious ways that the Saudi, with their vast petro fortunes, have successfully penetrated into the American infrastructure and our national way of life.
Ali Ahmed, the Director of the Institute for Gulf Affairs, spoke about the Saudi culture of corruption and intimidation, and how it has made its way into the United States.
E.J. Kimball, of The Investigative Project on Terrorism, spoke about the so-called, "mainstream", U.S. Muslim organizations, such as the Council for American Islamic Relations,(CAIR), and how they are directly connected to the Muslim Brotherhood and the Saudi Royal Family.
Reed Rubenstein, of the law firm of Greenberg Traurig, presented the evidence that had linked CAIR to various terrorist groups in the Middle East, as well as the Saudi Royal Family and Muslim Brotherhood, and how that had successfully been used to prevent CAIR from suing the American intellectual and academic, Andrew Whitehead.
Ilan Weinglass, the editor of The Terror Finance Blog, spoke about Rachel Ehrenfeld's case, and how the Saudis have used foreign courts to suppress the freedom of speech of American writers and journalists.
Sarah Stern, Founder and President of EMET, spoke about Title VI of the Higher Education Act, and how the Saudis have been using a little-known loop-hole in the law, to educate, on American Middle Eastern Studies programs on college campuses, the teachers of American youngsters from Kindergarten through twelfth grade, and how the Saudi American oil conglomerate, ARAMCO, is funding the curriculum guides.
Frank Gaffney, President of the Center for Security Policy, spoke about the Saudi penetration into our nation's financial infrastructure, and "Shariah Financing", or how the Saudis have made some of our financial houses compliant to Shariah law.
Winfield Myers, the Director of Campus Watch, discussed the Saudi funding of the American college campus, and its inhibitive effect on objective scholarship.
Andrew Cochran, Co-Chair, of the Counter-Terrorism Foundation discussed the Islamic Saudi Academy of Northern Virginia and how American Muslim students there are being incited to commit "jihad" on American soil, as well as the reluctance of certain American government officials to take the appropriate actions.
Dr. Sandra Alfonsi of Curriculum Watch discussed the Islamist revisionism in American textbooks, and how certain Muslim American groups have gotten involved in the "vetting process" of what American students study.
And finally, Anne Korin, Co-Director of the Institute for the Analysis of Global Security, spoke about the REAL root cause of the problem, our dependence on foreign oil, and the state of alternative energy, research and development.
Because the extent of the Saudi tentacles on the American infrastructure are so vast and so deep, EMET has decided to continue our investigation and disclosure of this subject with Part II of the Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Policy Series on Capitol Hill, next month.
EMET – Taking Middle East Foreign Policy by Storm
The Endowment for Middle East Truth (EMET) is an explicitly pro-Israel and pro-American think tank and policy institute in Washington, D.C. Our mission is to inspire an intellectual revolution. For years, policy makers in Washington have been operating on a "land for peace" foreign policy paradigm which has empirically proven to be fundamentally flawed. Sadly, very few other think tank or policy centers in Washington have the intellectual honesty and integrity to examine whether this paradigm has indeed brought us closer to the goal-post of 'peace,' or if in fact, it has endangered both Israel and the survival of the free, Western world, as we know it.
Despite the fact that EMET is only two years old, we managed to accomplish much more than many older and much wealthier organizations that have been around for decades. Day by day we are making a positive difference, standing up for Israel on the ‘front lines’ of foreign policy.
Recent Activities
Over the past few months we have been extremely busy. Our annual Rays of Light in the Darkness Dinner was held in June. This event honored those few Muslim and Arab intellectuals who have risked everything to speak out about their experiences regarding radical Islam. The efforts of these courageous individuals, some of whom have fatwas placed on their heads have been, up until now, wholly underappreciated. We are proud and humbled to take up the slack and give these heroes the recognition they deserve. This year’s event, held on Capitol Hill, was a resounding success. Over 200 people came to honor the nominees, Wafa Sultan, Zeyno Baran and Farid Ghadry. In addition, we honored three Americans for their service to the truth, syndicated columnist Cal Thomas, Representative Shelley Berkley (D- NV) and Representative Jim Saxton (R-NJ).

EMET also strives to influence policy as much as possible by writing articles relevant to Israel’s security. Our articles and letters are not only published on our website, but have been included in a host of publications, such as
The New Republic online
Commentary
The Jerusalem Post
Washington Jewish Week
Middle East Quarterly
As always, our articles deal with the most pressing issues facing Israel. Two of our latest pieces include dealing with Syria’s disingenuous peace overtures and a nuclear Iran.
In addition, we at EMET aim to educate as much as possible through direct discussions about security issues relevant to Israel, such as the peace process and the Iranian nuclear threat. Two of our fellows recently spoke to a group of Oxford and Cambridge students on these very issues, as well as defending Israel from attacks on college campuses.

New comment at Room 8 about timing of the ads etc.
Rogue operation, my ass. Even if McCain himself didn't know about the Wright ad coming down the pike, his campaign did.

What is it about Wisconsin this year?
At the request of the Republican Party, Attorney General J. B. Van Hollen attempted to suppress voter turnout and the party hired infamous voter registration fraudster, Nathan Sproul, to register WI "voters". (Sproul stiffed his workers as usual.)
Scott E. Detweiler's Maelstrom Technology Solutions ran the Wisconsin Republican Party's online operations as well as JB Van Hollen's.
Detweiler makes no pretense about being a staunch supporter of the Repubican Party.
It is no surprise that Maelstrom Solutions processes credit card contributions for the National Republican Trust PAC.
The company also manages the Coalition for America's Families website. The Coalition is run by former head of the Wisconsin GOP, Steve King, who has recently taken heat for the Coalition's controversial ads.
King reportedly is the Nixon security guard who manhandled Martha Mitchell during Watergate when she tried to call Helen Thomas.
In 2002, the Coalition was Allen Raymond's biggest client. Raymond, of course, was convicted in the NH phone jamming scandal.
In 2004 and 2005, the Coalition's revenue was less than $400k, according to 990s filed with the IRS. In 2006, the date of the most recent 990 available online, revenue jumped to $2.4 million of which $1.3 million went to consulting fees.
The names of the Coalition's benefactors are not public.

National Republican Trust PAC is linked to the Clarion Fund and Aish Hatorah. (On paper, Clarion Fund produced "Obsession".)
Hank Sheinkopf of Sheinkopf Communications is the p.r. consultant for Clarion Fund. Sheinkopf and Joe Mercurio go back years and are often quoted together in the media. Sheinkopf may be partners with Mercurio in Philipse Brook Group.
There appparently is a wide network of organizations associated with "Obsession" and a lot of the same people are running them.
E.g. - As noted above, Peter Leitner, NRT PAC treasurer, is an "organizer" of Citizens For National Security which held an all day "How To Spot A Terrorist" seminar at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton on 4/12/08. Dr. William Saxton, a former intelligence officer, is also a CFNS organizer.
The seminar was held jointly with the Florida Security Council headed by Tom Trento. Trento also heads the Watch Obsession Campaign which distributes Obsession nationally. The seminar cost $100 and supposedly 1,000 people attended.
Security Research Associates Inc., a non-profit, is also listed on the seminar registration form. SRA, headed by Trento was Christian Research Associates Inc., a Colorado corporation, until 8/07.
A retired LTC, Richard M. Swier, is on the board of both Watch Obsession and the Florida Security Council.
The Florida Security Council was registered in Florida on 3/23/07 and voluntarily dissolved on 4/8/08.
The Watch Obsession website only has pages for Jihad in Ohio and Jihad in Florida which, along with the FL Sec Council reg dates, indicates that the Obsession project was campaign-related.
A lot of money has been spread around in the last couple of years to finance the Obsession project and I'm not sure where it came from.
Aish Hatorah has proved religous educational services to some very wealthy people including top execs at Goldman Sachs and Bear Sterns.
The timing of the decline in Sheldon Adelson's fortune is interesting.
I don'tthink the Obsession issue should be overlooked because Obama won. I think this is about something a lot more sinister than skirting campaign finance laws.

Peter M. Leitner, intelligence expert, talking to NPR:
"Now, Leitner tells us, his security concerns center on Obama. Echoing a persistent rumor on the fringes of anti-Obama sentiment, Leitner says it's not clear that Obama is "even eligible to run for the presidency" because "no one's ever seen his birth certificate."

Sheinkopf, Roger Stone and Al Sharpton circa 2004, per Village Voice story by Wayne Barrett.
According to the Center for Public Integrity, Dick Morris brought Hank Sheinkopf into Clinton's 1996 campaign.

Hmmm...Hank Sheinkopf was suing Dick Morris in July 2008, according to this story in the NY Observer by Greg Sargent and Gabriel Snyder.
Maybe Sheinkopf was cut in on the National Republican Trust PAC media buys as a payoff.
Still doesn't explain where the $5 million came from to pay for the ads.

The National Republican Trust PAC fails to disclose the names of individuals who contributed more than $5 million between 10/16 and 11/13 in its Post-General Report filed with the FEC on 12/4.
The report is supposed to cover the period from 10/16 to 11/24 but only covers the period from 11/14 to 11/24.
What are the people behind the NRT PAC hiding?
