Hi lisB,

OT

I think it was you, and I'm too lazy to go back and find the original post, who added a long comment to another post which debunked a lot of health care reform misinformation. It was a response to a viral misinformation e-mail.

I wanted to say thanks for that. I used it (although I confess I edited it moderately to remove any value judgment language), and I received a civil response from one of my right-wing e-mail friends.

For a day at least, he is getting his information from somewhere else besides Fox News AND he sent it on to other people on his list.

BTW, if you are concerned about my edits, I can post it or send it to you.

Where is law enforcement in the equation. If I ask a question and can't be heard, or if I ask a question and the answer from the MOC can't be heard, then my constitutional right to free speech is being violated as well as the rights of the MOC. Why can't we simply enforce our laws? We need to start these meetings with a civics lesson on appropriate parliamentary procedures for the meeting so that it is clear that shouting over someone when they are speaking will not be tolerated, and then enforce that rule. Leaving it to fearful participants to out-chant these people is not good at all.

I don't know how old you are, but in my family, an education was always a must and educated people were always held in high regard. It is fairly recent development that larger segments of the population have come to resent or perhaps envy those with an education.

On another thought from the post, I have to object to the implication that the "low information" voters wanted by the GOP are exclusively white. I think the GOP would gladly accept all races of low information voters and lead them all into the abyss.

I know plenty of Republicans who are decent people, and who would always sympathize with and comfort the families of the deceased when a death occurs in the community. These people are not universally evil or anything like that. They are often incurious and uninformed to the point of being brain-washed, but they are not bad people by associating with the Republican party. I would say they are victims of their culture to some extent.

When you make comments that demonize the opposition, you become more like one of them than anyone would like to see.

We are all stressed. It is impossible for most democrats to identify with anyone who would vote for McCain/Palin, and it is easy to want to demonize for that reason alone. But I think we need to start the healing very soon.

I would say that the media has some of the blame. The available mainstream choices don't offer them any real information. The more important stories just don't show up anywhere in a newspaper, and conservative talk radio is everywhere.

I think there may be a substantial "Obama effect" here in Texas. This is a state where many a reasonable person might never admit that (s)he is voting for Obama. It is easier for these people to nod and agree with their republican buddies, but vote on conscience at the booth. I say this based on a few odd comments I've heard from people and an understanding that people here are afraid to express themselves publicly on voting democratic.

I am a native Texan, but I differ from most in that I am curious and educated. The media has some of the blame. While many read, their mainstream choices don't offer them any real information. The more important stories just don't show up anywhere in a newspaper, even the "Austin American Statesman" (a paper that endorsed Bush even though the county went for Kerry).

It is hard to explain. I think Obama may actually get more like 44% here. There are a lot of idiots, but there are a lot of reasoning people too.
