There are no Racists in the Republican Party

Red State, the popular online community for conservative thought, recently featured a letter from a movement conservative reaching out to American black people. Here's an excerpt:

"Dear American Blacks:

Sometimes the very best act of friendship I could do is tell you that the person you think is your best friend actually works against you behind your back, laughing at you, mocking your hardships, secure in the knowledge that you need him too much to ever leave him.

Sometimes -- no, actually always -- the true friend is the one who tells you what you don't want to hear. The one who does not indulge you, the one who will neither promise you nor give you candy and other bennies. Instead he tells you to sit down and eat your green beans and spinach -- and if you want that nice car, then quit whining, get an education, earn a good job, and earn that nice car.

The really ironic thing is that the slick, good-time "friend" will tell you what a jerk your true friend is. And you will believe him. You will believe him, that is, until you grow up, or until your good-time friend sells you up the river so far that your life is wrecked, and your future is ruined. Your wisdom will have been gained at a steep price.

But your true friend will still be there. And eating your green beans, securing an education, and working hard are still the path to success.

[...]

A Proposal

So while the Democrats toss your children's hopes and dreams aside, secure in the knowledge that you'll always vote for them, remember that your true friend is still here.

I ask you to consider, why is it that you hate Republicans so much? [...]

Republicans do not know how to approach you. Democrats and the Democrat-dominated press have misled you and stoked up your wrath to the point that you will not listen to us.

So I propose this: how about listening? How about listening to what Republicans have to say, instead of what the Democrats say we say? How about listening to what we have to say before booing us out of the building?

You may find that we make sense, not just for rich white people, but for everybody. To wit:

  • Republicans stand, as much as anything, for equality of freedom, equality of opportunity. We do NOT stand for equality of outcome. Hard work is rewarded, laziness is not.
  • Want a good job? Get an education.
  • Want special treatment? Tough.
  • Want the opportunity to escape poverty, crime, and poor schools? Then quit voting for the Democrats that put you there.
  • Tired of 15% unemployment in your areas? Then quit supporting the Democrats who raise taxes and force increase regulations on employers. [oh yeah, the Democrats call them the 'rich', but when was the last time a poor man gave you a job?]

Eat your green beans! Do the thing that frees you!

It's tough love, but I assure you, friend, it's love. That's why we fought like hell to restore the DC School Vouchers. That's why we fought like hell to lower taxes on businesses, so employers could hire more people and create more success for everybody.

We received not one ounce of gratitude from you, but we did it anyway. And we will continue to do what is right for America, for whites, for blacks, for Latinos, for Republicans, for Democrats, for today, and for the future."

At the urging of this letter, we will now listen to what the Republicans say and consider some of their actions regarding race. So, a list!

So now that we've taken a look at some of what conservatives and Republicans have to say about race, I'm sure that all Americans concerned with racial justice can agree that the GOP really is the party that has the best interest of american minorities in mind. I expect that as the letter-writer urges, black Americans will now turn to the GOP in droves. I mean, now that it's clear who's really a friend of whom.

Gee, with friends like Publicans, people of color need, um...actual friends?

Was that first part of the letter for real? I mean, do you think they meant it to be circulated? It is like a joke. Thanks for the excellent link-fest! Didn't go to all of them, but good job!

@cville dem

the whole letter is for real. i tried to just use a short excerpt at first but in the end i just decided to use almost all of it (i cut out the parts about vouchers). if this is what republican "reaching out politely" to black people looks like it's hard to imagine what their "normal" attitude towards black people is like...

It's important, I think, to recognize the context. As best as I can tell, Red State isn't "featuring" that letter any more than TPM is "featuring" your blog post.

That said, it's full of unintentional humor, isn't it? And you gotta love the comments below it, too.

@worthless

yes i think you're right. perhaps "a community member at redstate recently posted the following letter" would have been more accurate.

They've been saying this in many different ways for at least 35 years. One thing I can say for em is they sure don't give up no matter how assinine their position. And that's all I'll say for em cause they are despicable.

user-pic

Incredibly well constructed. And well received!

Thanks for the article -- I certainly wouldn't have read it otherwise. (I don't know how you can stomach going to RedState and reading that stuff!)

What I love about this is how the writer decided -- in a statement about how Republicans are the "true friend" -- to talk to black people like children from the get-go; "eat your peas!", "get a job!", etc. To me, this is the most amazing part of the GOPs race issue: most on the right honestly believe they are not bigots and, therefore, cannot see the deep bigotry in everything they write and say. Perhaps, after 8 years of Bush giveaways, their bellies are simply too fat to navel gaze.

Eat your green beans!

This is hilarious. Like the movie THE ROOM, it is unintentionally funny. Wow, "American Blacks!"

God...

lol

Get a job!?!?

Where? China? India? The local dealership cleaning out their showroom as they close the franchise?

user-pic

Oh yeah, I forgot, there aren't any racists in the Democratic party. Ha ha ha

Good post MC. Great lists. We need to respond to orgs like Red state.

You did a pretty good job!!

Here's the funny part - they think they are good people! Just telling it like it is.

Excellent post...

What a patronizing scrap of toilet tissue that letter is. The first offense is the salutation, which presumes to speak to black Americans as if they are an monolithic group. Then the letter moves to assume the voice of some unrecognized and unappreciated friend speaking truth, except it more akin to Satan tempting Christ in the desert. The letter presumes that African-Americans don't agree with the Republicans simply because they haven't listened to Republicans. Of course, it couldn't be the reverse. That would indicate rational behavior on the part of blacks, and Republicans, like the letter writer, all know that's just not possible.

This following paragraph is, perhaps, my favorite:

"We received not one ounce of gratitude from you, but we did it anyway. And we will continue to do what is right for America, for whites, for blacks, for Latinos, for Republicans, for Democrats, for today, and for the future."

Yes, not an once of gratitude. Just like black slaves showed not an once of gratitude for being saved from heathenism and brought to Christianity. In addition, Republicans don't act in self-interest. They only act in the best interest of all Americans. If only us rabble would stop having our own opinions and judgments, and do what mommy and daddy, er, the Republican party says is best for us, like eating our green vegetables, everyone would be happy. Just, WOW!

And not an ounce of gratitude for eliminating any accountability for our patrons who were sucking up all the money in the country and betting it on credit default swaps, costing you your jobs and homes.

Listen to us, Ingrates. We need to TEACH you, not listen to YOU.

Although the rest is the same tired old Republicrap, the first three points of advice in this letter are what Bill Cosby and Alvin Poussaint, and lots of other NON-right-wing African-Americans have been preaching for years. It's also what Barack Obama and especially Michelle Obama have been saying.

As Montcalm implies, the Republican-Confederate Party has dedicated itself for over half a century to rent-seeking on behalf of its favored constituencies. Its legislative platforms, regulation policies, and bench-packing strategies have aimed at denying equal opportunity to anyone else. The whole thing is kind of like Nazis advising Jews on how they too can prosper in the New Germany.

O.M.F.G. !!

Where even to begin deconstructing this incredible slab of crapola?

- Its patronizing and belittling tone ("Stop whining", "eat your green beans")?

- The veiled insults ("laziness", "special treatment")?

- The mindless partisanship ("Democrats who put you there")?

- The closing, with its air of sneering condescension ("not one ounce of gratitude")?

If I hadn't know this was an actual posting on RedState, I would have sworn this was a parody. Sadly, given that it IS from RS, it is real. Even sadder is that the average poster/commentator there probably believes that everything in this inane screed is nothing more than the unvarnished truth, and that this is some sort of sincere effort to "reach out" to black voters.

user-pic

Conviction is a beautiful thing, ain't it? I mean, they did not receive an ounce of gratitude and they kept doing it anyway. Ain't that typical GOP? Not a single voice to suggest they were doing something worthwhile, so they remain convinced it was worthwhile rather then ask themselves, "Maybe we should try something else?"

Don't tell the GOP, but this is why they will continue to lose for a few decades. Until the people who suffered for their unbridled everything have died, or gotten so old no one listens to them anymore, then we will try this again. They GOP is a once in a lifetime bad decision, letting them run the country.

"I made you a sh*t sandwich! Why aren't you grateful?" Where do I begin? What's the point? They're not open to any other ideas, but they have their conviction!
