Israel is a foreign country, the only one in the world which Americans fear criticizing. No other country has robots who rush to defend it. I can criticize Japan, Ghana or India to my heart's content, even at Goucher.
But not Israel, not without robotic demonstrators showing up and robotic donors waving their now-closed checkbooks.
It's a puzzlement.

That far I won't go. I think we nominated the right person and elected the right person.
But I will say this for Hillary. She knows the right and hates it viscerally. Obama doesn't seem to.
In other words, she knows that extending a hand to bigots, thugs and fascists is always a sign of weakness.

Actually, we have all the leverage we need to get the process moving. We attach conditions to the aid package. It's not that hard. Just like the IMF attaches conditions when it bails out an economy or the conditions we attach to every OTHER country that receives aid.
For instance, we made Egypt use part of its aid package to destroy Gaza smuggling tunnels.
A provision that says that all US aid is contingent on (settlement freeze, ending siege of Gaza, whatever) would have a powerful effect.

Andrew, you are totally right. I think we need full public funding of campaigns. That would make an immediate difference.
