Will We Elect An Angry Bitter Man?
I am a photographer and was fascinated by the non-verbal signals that McCain was sending during the debate. As Gladwell showed in his book Blink, you can't underestimate the importance of these signals. In fact, as the campaign has gone along, McCain photographs of McCain have shown that he is presenting an increasingly angry and bitter face. Look at the eye rolling, dismissive comments he made yesterday about Obama.
An editor friend of mine who has seen many thousands of campaign pics over the last year confirms this. Photo editors have an increasingly hard time finding pictures that don't freeze a scary, snarling face for all to see. Contrast that with Obama, who is one of those people who almost never have a bad picture taken of them. There's an occasionally goofy expression, but nothing that makes you think the man is possibly mentally unstable.
Interestingly, under the toll of the Presidency, photographs now reveal Bush to be much angrier and less in control than at the beginning of his first term. This probably reflects the enormous toll of being President.
But McCain hasn't even been elected, so imagine what he will turn into if elected.
