The bill's passage can be credited or blamed on the Democratic Party. Should the bill be defeated, that can only be laid at the feat of a few Blue Dogs and the entire Republican Party. The question to be asked is whether this bill benefits enough voters for it to be considered a net positive outcome for the electorate. While the bill fulfills our humanitarian commitment to another 30M uninsured, I don't think the emerging bill fulfills the obligation of that last sentence, then again, I'm not sure it was ever intended to do so. As you say, it may be better to fold the Democratic tent and walk away, leaving the opponents to meaningful healthcare reform to explain their opposition during the next election cycle, however I don't believe that will happen. The Democrats as well as the Republicans are reaching a consensus with which they can both claim a "victory" without actually doing much and the effects of the bill won't fully kick in for another 4 years. That smells pretty much like a "political victory" for the political class to me.

Interesting observation Lulu. Especially that of the "space bunnies". I still think that even colonists selected under those circumstances would take with them an understanding of the dangers of over-utilization of resources, and environmental impacts of industrialization that would seriously influence their activities on their new world.

Good questions pug. I talked about predation, (and perhaps voraciousness), and what I believe to be a link between it and intelligence, and in turn over-utilization of resources here. In the final analysis, I think "woodland meditation" does not inevitably infer a species that is wholly powerless or even uninterested in power as a goal, but might influence the manner in which power is wielded, (say, perhaps levying a tax or tribute as opposed to sacking a planet).
