Losing the initiative
(I am a Dutch freelance political strategist, so please forgive my awfull spelling.)
This Blago thing come at a very unfortunate time, just as Democratic rule is about to be reastablished this could change the narative. One overarching storyline in the media for the last month or so has been that Republicans are loosing the middle of the country and are fighting amongst themselves for power within their party. Establishing this storyline in the media means that every so many days publications like politico and the networks need to publish a story about the republicans on the defense. This Blago thing will put them on the offense, the will try every trick in the book to tie Obama to this mess, or at least some of his advisors.
We all know Obama very very probably wasn't involved in any way. But that doesn't mean that the media will stoptalking about it. Every Republican nut job with an ear in the media can now create a headline that reads: "REPUB OPERATIVE SUSPECTS OBAMA INVOLVEMENT IN BLAGO MESS!" and if his approval even drops 2 or 3 precent (within margin of error) a headline will read: "OBAMA POLLING LOWER BECAUSE BLAGO MESS!". Now in our current media climate we know these things will pass as the press seems to have an attention span of a butterfly. What is very important for the next eight years is that this mess is of the frontpage before it hurts the storyline of paradigm shift in the electorate that makes the republicans chanceless to recapture the middle.
So how do we get rid of Blago? Well the trial will not go away but thats something that can play out with a lot less media intrest, or at least of the frontpage. What needs to happen is the removal of Blago as governor, and in a matter of days not weeks or months. As long as this guy is in office he is taking spotlight away from Obama and his platform and plans.Therein llies the problem, this Blago guy doesn't seem the type to remove himself from office, so just preasureing him will not do. The Dems need to take back the initiative on this one by leading the charge against Blago, and remind the pulblic he is just as much a traitor to his own party as he is to the public.Every time a headline screams: "REPUB OPERATIVE SUSPECTS OBAMA INVOLVEMENT IN BLAGO MESS!" i want to read one that screams: "HARRY REID BITCH SLAPS BLAGO ON LIVE TV.". Make it so abundantly clear to everone that dems will be harder and swifter to deal with internal corruptions than republican ever where. That might regain dems the initiative they need.

I suggest the Nermal strategy. Crate Blago up and ship him to Abu Dhabi.

No, that's not what I know. I know he WAS NOT involved and frankly, you are perpetuating the problem here.

No you don't know that, i am a huge Obama fan and am absolutly convinced he didn't have any conection to it whatsoever, but i can't claim that i KNOW he's not in any way involved.

Personally I'm not too worried about it. Polls suggest that the American public is still pretty thrilled with the P/E, despite media and GOP sniping. That might change of course, but I really don't think so.
I think most people know what Blago's "Fuck him" meant. Even if Tweety doesn't seem to.

I agree the media and the right sniping is no problom for the PE, but if Blago doesn't disapear soon it will take valuable attention, time and energy from the PE. The sooner this guy is removed from office the sooner he disapears from the frontpage.

I thnk you're right about Republican motives and modus operandi. The question is whether Democrats will allow this bullshit storyline to develop. Probably. God never created a set of wooses any less courageous and tone deaf as the current set of Congressional Democrats.

Well the failing of two major autocompanies before the end of the year will take the attention of Blago.... But you have to be a real hardcore politico to see that as an advantage... Lets hope restructuring will save a lot of jobs for Detroit... Trust me this Blago thing will disapear of the frontpage if hudereds of thousands of people are sent home without pay...
