A very selfish and personal acount of why this foreigner wants no...needs Obama to win.

Like most in the world outside the US i want Obama to win. For all the right reasons. I think Irak was a mistake, my brother fought in Afganistan with the dutch army, told me that country needs more troops lots of them. I would like your countries status in the world restored, whille you pick a rotten apple for president but, your elected goverment beats the hell out of any posible other future superpower (China, Rusia) when it comes to me feeling save.

My biggest reason however is a very selfish and personal one. I am a masters student in Psychological research methods, and would like to one day maybee do my PHD or a post-doc degree in the US. I mean who doesnt? you guys have the best universities in the world! But if i however have no posible way to ensure myself cheaply when in the US, because i have a preexisting condition. I had cancer Hodgkins disease, not that it does return that frequnt in patients like me but i would never ever want to go even a few months without insurance (He some of the injections i got weekly where more expensive than my monthly wages!). So as i see it now i think Obama's healthcare plan is my only ticket into a long term stay in the USA.

Students in the US sometimes have options for receiving low-cost health care plans through their university, though that may not be available if you have a pre-existing condition (or even sufficient coverage for one like Hodgkins Disease), but it's something you may want to look into no matter who wins the election.

All the same, I think most of us here are definitely doing what we can to make sure Obama wins. Good luck with the post-doc plan!

Hoi Miesjhel,

hoe gaat't jonge/eress?!!?

I will tell you that the only way i believe you can get insurance that would cover your pre-existing Hodgkins is if you purchase a travel insurance program BEFORE you arrive in the USA (which is a pre-requisite for a student visa as well). In most policies I have seen, you would need to have the insurance for 6 months with no health claims before it would cover you in the USA.

Allors, it is not cheap (i.e. like GAK Groep standards in Nederland), but it will certainly be a lower cost than buying US-based health insurance, which I am pretty sure will not accept you because of your prior problems. Try AIG travel insurance in the UK, or a Dutch insurer first.

I hope you stay healthy and won't need any of it but you are right to be afraid to stay in America w/out insurance - because an estimated 1.9-2.2 million Americans are affected annually by medical bankruptcy.
So don't leave home without it!
groetjes!
