Senate was right to vote NO - Majority of Americans are against auto bailout

Latest IBD/TIPP poll - 63% of Americans surveyed are against an auto bailout.   The majority of Democrats, Republicans, Midwesterners, non-investors, etc.  all are against an auto bailout

If Congress is supposed to represent its citizens, then maybe the Auto Bailout should have been voted down.  Most Americans are against it.

Right. "The public" is always right when you agree with the majority.

When are you going to change your name to SerfBill which is who you are going to be after the Republicans win the honor of creating The Greatest Depression and destroying the living wage, pensions, healthcare, the 40 hour week, paid vacation, child labor laws, and every other protection labor fought for in the last 200 years.

I hate to say it but eventhough i am not for the Bailout, without it Labor will lose alot of strenght and thats what Repub's want. If they break labors back you will see alot worse working conditions show up.

I would take the time to remind you that Mussolini and Stalin were also somewhat popular with their respective publics.

As was ABBA.

The last time I looked, "America's Funniest Home Videos" drew more viewership than all of PBS programming combined.

And a majority of Americans polled also express belief in creation rather than evolution.

Popularity does not equate to either quality or sensibility. Neither do you.

Old Grouch - be careful what you say about the majority of Americans. They also voted for Obama.

user-pic

Yeah! And be careful what you say about ABBA. They've got a lot of rabid fans and you might begin to feel like a bit player in a George Romero film if they get wind of where you live!

I wonder if those people in the poll were Faux News watchers. It goes to show just how ignorant people are, as this is NOT a bailout, but a LOAN.
The sole purpose of the southern repubs who filibustered this loan, was to bust the union. Period. They wanted to union to actually tear up their contracts with the workers. Make them irrelevant.
Here is just a little information for you. The state of Alabama gave Toyota and the other automakers (NON UNION) who moved there from foreign countries millions and millions of dollars in tax incentives and breaks to build there. So, why is it so awful for us to give a little help to Americans? While keeping the profits here in the US instead of sending them to Japan and Germany etc?
No, your Senators want Americans to make less money. How patriotic.
You and everyone who is against this loan should be ashamed.

I have an artical about this though I make it out as a goverment controlled bankruptcy. Eather way its being used to break the workers back and not the CEO's or Goverment by vetoing it.

The CNN poll also showed the majority of Americans don't want an auto bailout.

People that want the bailout are unfortunately in the minority. This isn't quite the same as Mussolini, Stalin or ABBA.

Your Alabama/Toyota example isn't completely apples-to-apples. States should be allowed to give tax breaks to encourage companies to create new jobs in their states. But this bailout of the Big 3 is at the federal level and someone living in California for example doesn't get excited about their tax dollars going to bailout the Big 3.

Worried about sending profits to Germany or Japan? That's just silly. All car companies are global and you can't look at it that way. GM has plants all across the world too. Should Asians stop buying GM cars? Or kick GM out of China?

"Your Senators want Americans to make less money" - that's one of the most absurd things I have ever heard on TPM

Facts are absurd to you? That explains a great deal.

Senators don't want "Americans" to make less money. They want the US auto industry to be more competitive and get its cost structure fixed. That's nothing to be ashamed of. And those "Americans" that you speak of are less than 1% of the US population but you make it sound like Congress has it out for all Americans.

By the way - it's not a loan unless there's some chance it gets paid back. GM in its current form will never be able to turn a profit and hence pay back the "loan". That's why it needs to be restructured.

user-pic

No but it can be seen as a form of Goverment Regulated Bankruptcy.

The Restructuring come naturaly with a bankruptcy.

If we don't pass this they will get Emergancy loans with out having to restructure.

(From Yahoo, Associated Press covered)
The White House disclosed on Friday that it would consider using the $700 billion financial industry bailout plan enacted in October as a way to help the car companies, even though it has long insisted that money should be reserved for stabilizing markets.

Michigan Democratic Sen. Carl Levin, a key supporter of his state's leading industry, said the idea of emergency loans "is still very much alive."

I would rather see them in a goverment controled ordeal than just another blank check handed to them
