I remember reading that. Supposedly he has spent a lot of money in the last 2 years to make his place more carbon neutral and has been buying carbon offsets for his mansion and travel for years. But it would be far better if he just lived simpler. Planting trees is a piss-poor way to offset your own emissions. Like continually applying band aids when you ought to stop what keeps cutting you.

So, while we have a per-capita CO2 average for Americans that's high--the per-capital will be far more unequal. Maybe Gore thinks that he's doing well for his economic bracket. But that's bullshit and if he's going to be the Climate Change mediation advocate, he should get his act together.

Still, if his advocacy gets people and nations to act and mitigate the crisis, then the world's response to save itself would be Gore's ultimate carbon offset. He has the pulpit and the entire world listens. I mean, one policy shift that France takes, for instance, would make up for Gore's (now solar heated) pool, right?

Spare the chicken little routine? Oh come on now. I know that right now that if we were to suddenly yank deficit spending that it would be a disaster--I'm not advocating that. But, looking at the long term view, we have been relying too much on debt. I would say that our deficit spending level is something that we are going to have to dial back. I don't want to get into talking about inflation and currency devaluation and their linkages to this debt--I'm just trying to simplify my argument to debt, GDP, and deficit.

Just a couple of weeks ago, I was on here looking at GAO and CBO reports and becoming alarmed by what I saw. Quoting the GAO's "A Citizen’s Guide to the 2008 Financial Report of the U.S. Government" overview (the report is worth looking over):
The Government’s immediate challenge is to deal with the current financial crisis and the resulting economic recession. Net operating costs and budget deficits are likely to remain elevated for some time as the Government works to restore market stability. If the Government is to retain the ability to manage a financial crisis such as the
one today, it must eventually address the long-term fiscal imbalance resulting from Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. The Government’s fiscal policies for these programs as currently structured are not sustainable. Without changes, spending for Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid would permanently and dramatically increase the Government’s budget deficit and debt, leading eventually to renewed financial and economic instability

And finally, something that the GAO doesn't consider (and maybe you as you talk about how the U.S. is the linchpin) is that our current infallibility isn't a guarantee. OPEC grumbles about currency diversity instead of relying on the dollar. China as well. Yes, these are just rumors now and only mean that the world worries with how we are running our ship. But to me these are also warnings that we need to get our ship in better order. Hence this blog.

But, yeah, Gore is pretty cool right now. You probably saw him going crazy on SNL.

I only hope that we can get together and get the wherewithal to actually do something about climate change, and everything else. It seems all to often that the normal American citizen is dissociated with the problems that we face and apathetic. The president needs to set down, bluntly, the urgency that we face and how we all need to sacrifice to accomplish something. Since Vietnam, the government seems afraid to ask us anything, and we grow more and more disconnected.
