I write this about a person running for president. Said person, a veteran of the U. S. Navy, ran a tough, contentious, and often bitter campaign eight years prior to the current campaign. This time around, he wins his party's nomination handily and selects for his running mate the governor of a state with a small population, a governor who quickly becomes the darling of the far right-wing of the Republican party by railing against the elitist media, the intellectuals, and the Democrats. During the campaign, and for many years previous, the country has been engaged in a war that many come to believe is based on one lie after another, a war which the candidate says he has a secret plan to end if only the voting public will elect him.
The lies, the innuendos, the obfuscations - has John McCain really been channeling the ghost of Richard Milhouse Nixon all this time?
Paul Matlin
