If a tree falls in the forest...

...and nobody is there to hear it did it actually make a noise?

Well if a $3000 tax cut to an employer to hire or retain an employee doesn't immediately inspire a lot of hiring so what? A tax cut that isn't used doesn't cost the government anything. But once hiring does pick up it'll make the job recovery that much faster.

Remember Bush's jobless recovery of 2002-2005? Want a repeat of that? I don't. So why wouldn't a Democratic president want to promote hiring? We have an $11 trillion dollar debt as it is. We can't afford half a decade of double digit unemployment. Maybe this isn't the best way to do it. But if not then let's hear some better ideas.

When you come to a fork in the road TAKE IT, according to Yogi Berra.

Don't just stand there do something.

It is good that the House is going to weigh in on this as well as the Senate. And the Dems know (I hope) time is of the essence.

Remember Pelosi had 100 days as a goal in 07. She will hold up her end. Of that I am assured.

I hope the Senate, with pressure from the WH and the House, will act accordingly.

Write and call your senators. We are the change we've been waiting for and I'm not waiting for senators to get off their duffs. We can make their political lives miserable if they stall.

You got that right!!!!!

If only Senate Democratic leadership would fight to seat Democratic senators.

FAX your senators... always FAX.

"A tax cut that isn't used doesn't cost the government anything."

Excellent point and post rec'd.

And I apologize in advance for post-jacking; however, apparently I'm not tech-savvy enough to understand how to establish a post of my own.

Would anyone mind explaining it to me as if I were 2 years old or starting a new post to help? (I'd address this in my own post if I could...)

About all the help I can give you is to find the 'How to use my TPM' sentence on the right hand side of this page and click on it. The information there should get you started. Happy learning.

Thanks, flowerchild, for your suggestion.

I've tried this several times now with no luck (I think it may have something to do with my pre-historic computer). Instead of continuing to litter markg8's post, I think I'll e-mail the staff here. Sorry, again, to markg8 for the disruption.

Top of your page, hit "Blog Now." When the new screen shows, write in your Title, then your Post in the space provided. Hit "Save" at the bottom when you're done, and after a few minutes, it should post on the Readers Page.

That's rough & ready, but it should get you there.

Rock on.

I look at this proposal as a way to target tax relief toward businesses that create jobs. Even if the amount isn't high enough to significantly impact hiring decisions, it still puts more money in the hands of companies that are putting people to work. Makes sense to me.

Makes sense to me Mark.

Many times "retraining" means sending someone to a continuing education course. $3K is about the right amount of money for a few-day course involving travel. That would have a ripple effect in the economy as well.

A $3K tax cut for a business is aimed directly at small businesses which are the ones shedding the most people currently.

The problem is that many Dems, upon hearing the "business" is a beneficiary of something, immediately decide it's scandalous. Kudos to the new administration for thinking broadly.
