Why is Hillary's organizing so bad?
I think the obvious reason is because most campaign workers except for the very top advisers are young. They and their cohort are not excited about Hillary the way they are about Obama. It's hard to get the best and brightest young operatives to be your field organizers and canvassers let alone get them to do their best work if 90% of their friends are for the other guy.
But Michelle Cottle's article published in the New Republic on 1/25/08: http://www.tnr.com/politics/story.html?id=75e41edb-784d-4f9a-ba6e-08cab93d09ae
shows a more serious problem in Hillaryland. At the beginning there's a passage about the conference call the morning after the IA debacle .
All the top Team Hillary advisers were on the line except for Patti Solis Doyle then enroute to NH.
None of these people had anything to say. No advice, no suggestions, no words of encouragement. Hillary finally gave up and said, " This has been very helpful talking to myself," and hung up on the group.
There have been many stories about how communication upward stopped at the door of her top five advisers. I'd say her lousy organization isn't just a problem at the bottom I'd say it permeates throughout the midlevel and upper echelons of the campaign. There's no incentive to pipe up if your suggestions are constantly shot down or you're essentially told to shut up and get back to work. I'm sure there were a lot of operatives in the field who could see with their own eyes and ears what the Obama team was doing more effectively last fall and winter but their warnings were never heeded. This info never rose to the top, on the contrary any mention of it was discouraged. When that happens it's only a matter of time before the operation gets out of touch and it's very discouraging to your troops in the field.
That's my thoughts on the matter.
