BIRTHERS and BUTTHEADS: where the *hell* did they come from?? (a brief TPM travelogue)

I haven't lived in USA in a really long time, but decades ago, if you drove through the hinterlands (much of Pa. even as an example), there was little radio, only a rare AM station spewing bible blather.  Someone had the marketing idea to offer the ruralists Rush Limbaugh for free in the 1990s, the business structure being that the big company offering it to the stations got to sell all the commercial time except for a little bit that they let the local stations sell.  Great deal for the local stations; at least somebody would listen, unlike the biblical baloney and the stations didn't need to generate programming and got paid for a little commercial time, too!   And the listeners got rural-tailored Limbaugh (less-educated rural, of course), and his self-congratulatory ignorance.  And the successful model was repeated:  the bad guvmint and the bad immigrants and the bad minorities and they got almost no Second Amendment rights left and all those bad people who got good-for-nuthin' education wanna take that little bit away too.   A place for the states' rights and George Wallace voters (bigots, that is) to feel comfy.  Plus bad abortionists and anybody who is in office that doesn't agree with all of the above is also bad.  People in cities, as well.  Bad, almost all.  And now Fox has got it all on TV.

So that is their education, their socialization:  ancient prejudices mostly, except now they have organizers to validate those as good.  And it ain't the bible; nothing about love thy neighbor or turn the other cheek.  (Or fair play or responsibility either; ask Sarah about her "death panels.") More fun to nurse bitter resentments; spite is right!

They talk about the Constitution (these idiots did), how mad they get over it being abused, but they really don't know or care about it other than being a Big Word, not at all.  Neither for the rule of law; just issues above that Limbaugh etc. hammer (and that's important to understand; they are not patriots and so they talk up secession as in Texas and Alaska  and not only there).  Thus, it matters not how someone who disagrees with Limbaugh got into office (like voted in maybe, who needs that?)  - he needs to be taken out of office by any and all means.  Cuz he might hurt the Constitution, for one thing!  And gun-toting ruralists and curmudgeons shot up a whole bunch of stuff to defend that, by gum!  Or so they recollect.  And this really matters to them -- unless, of course, they secede, foist insurrection, or back a coup (their only limitation on those being their lack of ability).

OLBERMANN Special Comment: SARAH "Death Panel" PALIN, Beck's assassination "humor" et al savaged

Hard words for hard times.

"Dangerously irresponsible."

Indeed.  -O.T.

ALSO, revolted by Glenn Becks's disgusting "joke" about assassinating Pelosi.  I don't normally watch anything he says, but I made an exception here and pulled the clip to view it.  With no hyperbole, it's really sick.  I thought it might have been a fleeting quip in very bad taste; it isn't fleeting at all.   Glenn may need a visit from the FBI.  I'm really getting worried.

  • Favorite Blogs Josh is a journalist of historic importance, I believe. Still thrilled by his smackdown of the Social Security Bamboozlepalooza! I love Washington Post's Chris Cillizza, especially The Line on Fridays (does that count as a blog? :)), but I don't read the Post much as of August 2009 - too bloody right wing as blog below.
  • Favorite Books I dug all them books on Iraq, for example. State of Denial was pretty rich.
  • Favorite Quotes "What in effect happened was that a very astute, probably the most astute, bureaucratic entrepreneur I've ever run into in my life became the vice president of the United States. He became vice president well before George Bush picked him. And he began to manipulate things from that point on, knowing that he was going to be able to convince this guy to pick him, knowing that he was then going to be able to wade into the vacuums that existed around George Bush--personality vacuum, character vacuum, details vacuum, experience vacuum." -Lawrence Wilkerson ********** Iraq expert predicts: "I think the victory will be rapid, within about three weeks." (John McCain, MSNBC, January 28, 2003.) See, e.g., Crooks and Liars from July 2008, http://www.crooksandliars.com/2008/07/29/mccain-fails-mccains-commander-in-chief-test/ ********** "Vice President Cheney has been at the head of a movement whose notion is somehow that we can't reconcile our core values, our Constitution, our belief that we don't torture, with our national security interests. I think he's drawing the wrong lesson from history. [A]fter all these years how many convictions actually came out of Guantanamo? How many terrorists have actually been brought to justice under the philosophy that is being promoted by Vice President Cheney? It hasn't made us safer. What it has been is a great advertisement for anti-American sentiment. Which means that there is constant effective recruitment of Arab fighters and Muslim fighters against U.S. interests all around the world." - President Barack Obama http://wcco.com/politics/Barack.Obama.Dick.2.965981.html ********** "My administration is the only thing between you and the pitchforks." http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/washingtondc/la-na-obama-presidency19-2009apr19,0,1035963.story ********
