Week of July 26, 2009 - August 1, 2009

MSNBC Countdown: "Good evening from New York, I'M GOVERNOR HOWARD DEAN [??!!!], Keith Olbermann has the night off."

What in the hell??  http://www.observer.com/2009/media/howard-dean-guest-anchor-msnbcs-countdown

And so it's Howard on the air (linked down below), stumbling just a bit, but not so bad for a Governor masquerading as a TV news host.

(Much better than what they had in Alaska, a sportscaster masquerading as a Governor!)

I wish Howard every success in whatever he is up to with this!  You can be the judge as to his first outing, but don't be too harsh; first time on any job has got its rough spots!  To be honest, I'm still above all else disoriented by this!  LOL!

"Good night, and good luck," Howard!

UPDATE:  And as a special bonus, here is Number 2 in the Countdown, the Governor taking us to Shatners's unbelievable beat-poet riff via Conan, using Palin's own words (I thought this was a lame joke at first, but she actually pronounced what Shatner put out there!)  Whew!

And with Olbermann the baseball blogger in Cooperstown for vacation, here is Guv (Vermont Guv!interviewing the former in his geeky vacation eyeglasses about Pete Rose-- some televised surrealism for each of us!  Whole broadcast is good BTW.

BEST, THOUGH FROM A POLICY PERSPECTIVE:  This would be number 4 on the Countdown, explaining how government health care provided by the VA is by far the best and most efficient health care in USA, in part related to the lifelong association with their patients and their incentives flowing therefrom to invest in their patients' well being.  This is very strong stuff, see it if you can.

I figure these gun nut guys are partly about BIGOTRY. Do you reckon?

It hit me recently (and maybe I'm slow) that this whole birth certificate panjandrum is really a stalking horse for race.  They can't use the N word so they say he's not a citizen.  Also when Liz Cheney helped them restate it recently as,
"People are uncomfortable with a president who is reluctant to defend the nation overseas."

So even if the birthers lose the the certificate argument as a code for bigotry, now they have this other one, which Liz might rephrase as,
"People are uncomfortable with a black President since blacks can't be trusted to defend the nation overseas."
That's where Liz Cheney *lives* and that's what the bigot base wants to talk about (plus, it's a good pivot, they're not being unreasonable (or bigots!), they are worried about national defense - patriots!).  I think this is true for some of the gun wackaloons as well, the ones that don't just value guns or family protection but the ones who beat their breasts passionately about their vital right to defend themselves.  Just whom are they picturing blowing away as they become so envenomated over the issue?  They mean, of course (do yourself a favor and don't click this) "those people."

NRA is aware of this, of course, so it prophylaticly fills the internet with articles by "independent-minded" black guys who swear up and down that race is not any factor in gun-worship.  NRA puts a whole lot of crazy stuff out, usually by "independent" experts doing phony-baloney "studies" that NRA orders up and funds.

So what do you think, are racists disguising themselves as gun yahoos?

He became vice president well before George Bush picked him. And he began to manipulate things from that point on, knowing that he was going to be able to convince this guy to pick him, knowing that he was then going to be able to wade into the vacuums that existed around George Bush--personality vacuum, character vacuum, details vacuum, experience vacuum." -Lawrence Wilkerson ********** Iraq expert predicts: "I think the victory will be rapid, within about three weeks." I think he's drawing the wrong lesson from history. [A]fter all these years how many convictions actually came out of Guantanamo? How many terrorists have actually been brought to justice under the philosophy that is being promoted by Vice President Cheney? It hasn't made us safer. What it has been is a great advertisement for anti-American sentiment. Which means that there is constant effective recruitment of Arab fighters and Muslim fighters against U.S. interests all around the world." - President Barack Obama http://wcco.com/politics/Barack.Obama.Dick.2.965981.html ********** "My administration is the only thing between you and the pitchforks." http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/washingtondc/la-na-obama-presidency19-2009apr19,0,1035963.story ********
