M.J. Rosenberg kidnapped by space aliens? Mitchell, TPM not confirming

Readers who had been wondering why TPM Café's M.J. Rosenberg had no follow up on his early report http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/01/19/great_news_george_mitchell_to_be_middle_east_speci/ that renowned peacemaker George Mitchell would be named MidEast Envoy, grew concerned when a what seemed to be a mere rumor-of-the-day as to Rosenberg's having gone missing was not promptly denied.  Rosenberg, who had been strongly expected to further comment but did not do so Wednesday or Thursday, had instead, some sources indicated, been abducted by extraterrestrials.

A source close to the TPM Editor & Publisher, speaking in an impatient-sounding voice and requesting anonymity, at first cast doubt on the swirling speculation, then gave rise to new questions in suggesting that even if Rosenberg had been kidnapped by space inhabitants, the seizure might only be temporary and the commentator could well be soon repatriated to USA.  Mitchell had put on a brave face at Thursday's State Department appointment ceremony, projecting a confident image that suggested he knew nothing of either Rosenberg's reported intergalactic travails, or the failure of TPM Café to comment on his absence.  A spokesman for Mitchell later referred inquiries to the U.S. Air Force, which declined comment.

Barack snubs Israel by making first call to Palestinians' Abbas

I hope this was an intentional snub and not a gaffe.  It's going to be noticed, and not just on this site!

Whether it's a good idea in substance or not, I'd rather he were signalling something than mucking about.

AFP:  "This is my first phone call to a foreign leader and I'm making it only hours after I took office," [Abbas spokesman Nabil Abu] Rudeina quoted Obama as telling Abbas.

To me, this is *wild.*  "Sense of entitlement" getting itself a rude surprise, if accurate. Maybe more change has come that we reckoned on!

Was I the last one to understand Bush's final con game?

"There's no such thing as short-term history."  He repeats it ad nauseum, but what the hell does he mean by this?  What is he now, a freaking historical philosopher?

I guess I'm getting slow, but it only came to me yesterday.  It's so simple:  one day, things will be probably be calmer in Afghanistan and/or Iraq, at least for a while.  When one or both of those days comes, whether through Obama's good work or somebody else's, the Failed President will spring forth to take credit.  (If things then get worse, he'll  just say that's new and unrelated.)  (1)What brilliance to treat 9/11 not as a criminal matter but as a war with Aghanistan, then abandon the war to go pursue Wolfowitz's insane dream of an Iraq invasion!  Peace in Afghanistan, doesn't matter when, a master stroke by Bush!  (2) What a genius Bush was to invade Saddam's inward-looking mad dictatorship which had nothing to do with 9/11!  Maybe a Nobel Peace Prize for the Great Man.

(3) One day, Osama Bin-Laden will finally die.  Bush intends to take the credit.  He hounded Bin-Laden, forced him to live a hard life, and Bin-Laden will be dead. See?  Another Nobel for Bush, if he lives to see the day.
