People are on the Appalachian Trail all the time

We're so chummy, I call it the 'AT.' And South Carolinians are probably as good at recognizing Governor Sanford as I am at recognizing Governor Patterson. Well, OK, Sanford may be a little less distinctive, but still: we should expect backpackers to start saying, "yeah, I saw the Governor. He's got plenty of water and is hiking through to Harpers Ferry." Or, wherever he's going.

Maybe this is just because TPM is my primary news source, but it seems like there's a big kerfuffle over this. So, I would have expected hikers to start reassuring us by now.

Seeing the gov. out of context, many people might well fail to recognize him. I once ran into a cow-orker moonlighting as a cocktail waitress...I asked her if she had a sister named Martha. Lucky for me ('cause she was seriously hawt) she thought I was joking around.

Ask anyone who wears a uniform, and they will tell you that it is very common for people to fail to recognize them when they are not wearing it. The governor's uniform is a suit and tie, and a microphone shoved in his face.

I, for one, find it really sad that we have gotten to the point where someone doesn't answer their phone for a few days and the rest of the world thinks they have vanished.
