What You Do With What You Got

I love the message Eddi Reader is conveying. It reaches out and grabs your heart.

You must know someone like him
He was tall and strong and lean
With a body like a greyhound
And a mind so sharp and keen
But his heart, just like a laurel,
Grew twisted round itself
Till almost every thing he did
Caused pain to someone else
It's not just what you're born with
It's what you choose to bear
It's not how big your share is
But how much you can share
And it's not the fights you dreamed of
But those you really fought
It's not what you've been given
It's what you do with what you've got
Now what's the use of two strong legs
If you only run away?
And what use is the finest voice
If you've nothing good to say?
And what use is strength and muscle
If you only push and shove?
And what's the use of two good ears
If you can't hear those you love?
Between those who use their neighbors
And those who use a cane
Between those in constant power
And those in constant pain
Between those who run to glory
And those who cannot run
Tell me which ones are the cripples
And which ones touch the sun?
This song came to mind after the huge debate we had on healthcare in CVille's post the other day. I thought I would share. This song is so packed with wisdom - how easy it is to forget it though.

Mage, this is beautiful poetry. I do not get sound.
I imagine it enhances. I could go on and on but to no avail.

Thank you, Mage! That is beautiful. And how easy it is to try and make the world a bit brighter - no matter how much pain there is or how disabled one might be. What a shame that some choose to do the opposite.
There's a lot of love here. :)

Absolutely Thera :)
I am sending my love to you and Mr. TheraP too. I hope all is going well and he is not having too many side effects. :)

Someone sent me this saying on a card while I was going through chemo. Sorry, I am doing it from memory...it was something like.
It is not how you weather the storm
It is whether you dance in the rain.
I hope you dance with Mr. TheraP, even if it is just a few minutes swaying side by side in the kitchen with your fuzzy slippers on. :)

"Suffering is universal, but misery is optional."
They don't tell you that on your first day out of the nest. Kinda have to work it out on your own, I guess.

He's doing pretty well. Still in some pain but able to do more. But the thing he wants to do - the pain med counteracts. And the surgery prevents any "straining" - so maybe you can get the picture: The bowels are not cooperating.
Otherwise, lots of extra chores. But we're both cheerful really. (and again, last night in the middle of the night... he had to talk about Gaza)
So sometimes one's own pain leads out to the wider world.
I can see all of us are banding together for both solace and as a defensive maneuver!
I really love this thread here.
Peace to all.

Really? I can't imagine why. Heh, just joshing. Seriously, I got a bit choked up, great sentiments. Thanks for posting it.

Thanks for the poetry, Madge. It was well chosen for the times, as well as for an internal debate at the Cafe.
Poetry/music/the arts are often the only way to make sense in an insane world.

Beautiful. It made me cry at eight o'clock in the morning. But, that's okay. My face needed washing anyway.
