The government provides more education to more students in this country than the private sector ever will.

Do you like your police and fire departments and military? Would you trade them for private security firms that come to help you only if you can afford to pay?

Single-payer: you'll still have your doctor and hospital. All the government does (all we, your fellow citizens, will do) is write the check. We can do this.

I agree with the above that hanging this post on your personal story was perfectly appropriate. I hear too many apologists for the private insurance system blame hypothetical people for making bad choices or being lazy or somehow deserving their sickness. Ugh. Your story and more stories from real people who are being ground into bankruptcy by this failed system will remind them that universal health coverage is about taking care of real people, our friends and neighbors and fellow citizens. That's what being an American is supposed to be about.

"No such thing as single payer"? Don't you think I know that single-payer would be paid for by my taxes (and yours, etc.)? I'm all for that. Right now I pay $2700 a year for crummy coverage from the individual market. I'd rather see Obama raise my taxes $2700 (our 2008 income: $42K) and provide my family (and yours, etc.) with reliable health coverage no calamity or twist of genetics will take away.

I still Obama's pin on my hat, but even I can recognize that Obama can't get out in front on foreign policy, especially if he holds a different position from that of the current administration. We won, but we wait our turn. To have a President-Elect enunciating foreign policy undermines the Constitutional authority of the President and whatever practical leverage that President may have left. The time for Obama to lay out his plan for Gaza is 12:01 p.m. EST, January 20, 2009.

Add those health advantages to the list of economic and geopolitical reasons Tom Friedman gave last weekend for cranking up that gas tax now! We need to change a lot of our habits and turn that fixed group of pedaling enthusiasts into a majority.
